MARCH TOURNAMENTIt's that time again. Our next tournament will be mixed doubles on the weekend of March 22/23. As usual there will be a potluck at 7 on Saturday, with happy (half)hour at 6:30. The McClures will emcee this event. Because March is the busiest month in the valley, it is important to make your reservations early. We hope to see you all in Borrego for this weekend. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 21. Signup at clubhouse, or contact Gary Edwards: phone 619-390-8412, e-mail: garyre@cox.net, cel: 619-992-8412. The draw will be completed by 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday at 8:00 A.M.
FEBRUARY TOURNAMENTWe had a good turnout of 40 contestants for the February 15 - 16 tournament. The first day of the tournament was a round robin, which determined the draw for normal play on the following day. Tatiana was not quite recovered from a cold, but did a great job helping run the round robin on Saturday, telling each of us where to go in the 80 mini-matches, and keeping track of the results. Thanks Tatiana! Jef provided the photos below.
TOURNAMENT NEWS The Gilloons did a great job of emcee-ing the potluck, which overflowed to the outside, incidentally, and the awards presentation. Facility improvements were the completion of the pool and surrounding area, a new southwestern style fireplace. As always, we are pleasantly surprised at the Grangers industriousness. Sandi Granger won the $50 tournament prize! Congratulations, Sandi!

DON BECKERDon Becker was a major force in the BSTC until several years ago. A great guy by anyone's standards. But Mary Quimby reports that, sadly, Don passed away February 10 following triple bypass surgery performed on January 10. She spoke with Phyllis, and found she is coping with the help of friends and neighbors. Phyllis planned the services to be a "Remember Don" service with people recalling the happy occasions in his life. A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association.
Mary says "The years when Don and Phyllis looked after the tennis club were very special years. I am grateful that I spoke with them in December and wish so much that they had been able to drive to Borrego and see the "new" club as they hoped to do. He was hospitalized less than 2 weeks after we spoke and never went home."
The obituary from The Desert Sun follows:
