OCTOBER 26 - 27 TOURNAMENT - MIXED DOUBLESAnother hot summer is over, but due to thunderstorms in August, most parts of the desert are fairly green. The next tournament will be the weekend of October 25 - 26, 2003. This is the weekend of start of the season: Borrego Days, so reservations may be prudent. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 24th. Signup at clubhouse, or contact Gary Edwards: phone 619-390-8412, e-mail: garyre@cox.net, cel: 619-992-8412. The draw will be completed by 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday at 8:00 A.M.
IN MEMORY
1934 - 2003Jim Rathbun, our president, died September 20, 2003. Jim was a great guy, and well loved by members of our tennis club. Jim was outwardly healthy until almost the end, playing tennis the month he succumbed to liver cancer. Harriet and John Schultz were there with him at the end. He will be missed, but we will keep many fond memories of Jim in our hearts. Jef remembers Jim's capable tennis skills:
What a diabolical tennis player he was -- especially his hard, low, slice, which he delivered with devastating effects, and with a maddening nonchalance! He used his trademark Weed, which many mistook for a barn-door -- clearly the largest raquet in the club. We had many great matches, and, afterwards, he often invited us over to his camp for beer to help nurse our damaged egos.
Barbara has provided a brief summary of Jim's life:
Jim loved all of you so much... you were an important part of his life.
He was born in Ferndale, Maryland, May 11, l934. Moved to California when he was 3 months old. Lived most of his growing up years in Torrance. Went to El Camino College and graduated at Long Beach State where we met at a Young Democrats meeting. His degree was in psychology.
When he retired his job title was 'Family Court Consiliator'. He counceled people going through child custody disputes. He retired at age 54 because "there are so many things I want to do". We first moved to our vacation home in South Lake Tahoe and later moved back to southern Cal to be closer to our families. Our daughter, Laura, lives outside of Atlanta, Georgia and was always the treasure of Jim's life. Before it was fashionable he was a hands on Daddy.
His loves were tennis, skiing and people. As did Will Rogers he never met anyone he didn't like.
Another important part of Jim's life was his race horses. Many have been shown all his "win" pictures at Los Alamitos race track. He owned quarter horses and raced them for about ten years.
Jim did not believe in funerals. We will have a party to celebrate his life. We will play tennis in the afternoon and then gather, tentatively at the Music Theatre west rehearsal hall in Long Beach, for food, drink, companionship and remembrances of Jim. I hope all of you who loved him will attend.
The date is Saturday, November 15th. More formal invitations and directions to get there will be forthcoming.
If you want more info I will write. Take care, Barbara
The BSTC executive committee has nominated Fred Dow to assume the presidency of the club, and he has graciously accepted the position. He has some big shoes to fill, but Fred is very capable.
APRIL TOURNAMENTWe had a great turnout of 57 contestants for the April 12 - 13 tournament. News flash: Harriet was in the semi-finals!
TOURNAMENT NEWS The Beans did a great job of emcee-ing the banquet. Jim Rathbun awarded the John Schultz Perpetual Ball-in-the-mouth Trophy to Sandi Granger. The food was excellent, and the Grangers provided hot dogs in addition to the leftovers for lunch the next day. Tatiana gave a great speech... The meanest mom. The weather, as usual, was great, except for a bit of wind. Bonnie Wilson won the $50 prize and Rachel Edwards the $100 grand prize for those who played in every tournament this season. Congratulations, Bonnie and Rachel!

RECYCLED E-MAIL JOKE circulated by Fred Wantland 11-18-2002
I recently picked a new primary care physician. After two visits and exhaustive lab tests, he said I was doing "fairly well" for my age.A little concerned about that comment, I couldn't resist asking him, "Do you think I'll live to be 80?"
He asked, "Well, do you smoke tobacco or drink beer?"
"Oh no", I replied, "I've never done either."
Then he asked, "Do you eat rib-eye steaks and bar-b-qued ribs?
I said, "No, I've heard that all "red meat" is very unhealthy!"
"Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf?" he asked.
"No I don't," I said.
He said, "Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or fool around with sexy women?",
"No," I said, "I've never done any of those things."
He look at me and said, "Then why in hell do you want to live to be 80 ?"
