We had a good turnout of 41 contestants for the January 17 - 18 mixed doubles tournament. The weather cooperated with little wind and pleasant temperatures. Jef dropped his camera and it 'forgot' all the pictures, but Carmen took some backup pix.

TOURNAMENT NEWS

Carole Stadelbacher did a great job of emcee-ing the potluck on Saturday and Jim Perez did his usual great job at the awards ceremony. Dick Stadelbacher graciously cooked hot dogs for lunch on Saturday. Thanks, Dick! Fred cooked up a batch of terrific tamales. Thanks, Fred! Many other members graciously contributed some yummy treats to the goody bar. Thanks to everybody for another wonderful weekend! The weather also contributed for another successful tournament. We dodged the bullet, as it rained the day after the tournament concluded! Fred Wantland won the $50 drawing. Congratulations, Fred!

ANZA TENNIS CENTER NEWS

Another end of the month round robin / potluck took place on Sunday, January 25th. There is no charge. $1 can be optionally be contributed to the winner's prize, assuming the winner had donated. These events take place at 12:30 p.m. on the last sunday of the month.

BORREGO NEWS

Although there was some rain in Borrego shortly after the last tournament, it wasn't significant, and so the drought continues. The weekend of the next tournament is designated Archaeology Weekend, and hikes, lectures, displays and demonstrations will be featured at the visitor center. For example, on the 14th, there will be a lecture at 10:30 on prehistoric trade and travel, at 1:30, a lecture on archaeo-astronomy, and at 3:00 on ancient Lake Cahuilla. More lectures are scheduled for the 15th and 16th, as well. Due to Monday the 16th being Presidents Day, Borrego may have more visitors than usual in the valley.

T-SHIRTS

Don Wilson obtained a 2 year inventory of embroidered BSTC T-shirts, and Harriet Lisak had the idea to organize them in bags. She and Marilyn Bean spent about 3 hours organizing them at the last tournament. Thanks Harriet and Marilyn! They are available for sale for $10.00 each and can be purchased at each tournament for those who don't reach the finals.

RECYCLED E-MAIL JOKE circulated by Fred Wantland 4-14-2003
After every flight, pilots fill out a form called a gripe sheet, which conveys to the mechanics problems encountered with the aircraft during the flight that need repair or correction.

The mechanics read and correct the problem, and then respond in writing on the lower half of the form what remedial action was taken and the pilot reviews the gripe sheets before the next flight.

Never let it be said that ground crews and engineers lack a sense of humor.

Here are some actual logged maintenance complaints and problems as submitted by Qantas pilots and the solution recorded by maintenance engineers.

By the way, Qantas is the only major airline that has never had an accident.
