MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTHELLO BSTC MEMBERS hope your summer has been safe, healthy and bountiful. Janelle Acosta survived a bad car crash several weeks ago. Her broken pelvis is mending and did not damage her good looks or sense of humor. Jim Perez is in far off lands hunting game meat. He's surely bringing back some good stories. Dick Stadelbacher is now recovered enough from his surgery with complications to get out from the watchful and caring eye of Carole.
SAN CLEMENTE WEEKEND REPORT: The San Clemente weekend 'Getaway' was a great success. There were at least 24 members and guests enjoying the fun, friendship, and camaraderie. We BBQ'd in the hookups area. The Sat. potluck had us all sampling buffalo, elk, and albacore along with multiple selections of casseroles and salads, and drink. The weather was beautiful, clear with cloud pierced sunny days, cool evenings, 74 degrees ocean water with surf able waves. In addition to playing tennis amongst ourselves, we played with the locals on the tennis courts. Note: We'll have to field a better team next year if we are to beat them on there own turf. We've learned more about how to make future park reservations. (talk with Betty Minkle and Carmen Perez about details). The park now has a visitor center documenting its establishment. Example: The SC pier is half the distance from LA to San Diego (or visa versa for the San Diegans).
RUMMAGE SALE: Jim Gilloon is our point man. Be sure to coordinate everything to do with the sale through Jim.
A storage area is being arranged for early contribution storage. Members are encouraged to save up their discarded household items (clothes, tools, etc.), and bring them on the tournament weekend starting February 19th, so that they can be sold the following weekend. Remember, one man's junk is another man's treasure. We're thinking of selling hot dogs and lemonade, too. Other ideas and input are welcome.
Notes:
a. From the No. Orange County area: Dows have a flatbed trailer with which they are offering to haul your items.
b. In Borrego: Grangers are offering an extended stay period for those working on the sale.DUES: We are going to hold the Dues at $75/per year/per person. We think that will be OK and a successful rummage sale should help. We're encouraging members to pay early, and past members to rejoin our fun-loving and competitive group. We currently have about $2700 in the treasury.
THE TENNIS CLUB AND GRANGERS: They're back! Healthy and strong. The club looks great. Borden and Sandy are into their bold improvement modes. Water pipe breakages have been repaired and heavy copper conductors are being laid to the back RV area. Clubhouse tile flooring has been completed and designs for the fireplace are in the review cycle. Activities and other tournaments are on the rise at the Center.

BORREGO NEWSSome interesting weather occurred in Borrego this past summer. In early September, a heavy downpour hit the northwestern part of the valley. Flooding hit the downtown section of town, but was very intense in the Sun Gold and De Anza areas, where some houses wound up with severe damage and a few feet of silt deposited throughout. But visitors to the park will be impressed with the flood damage in Palm Canyon. Most of the palms were actually broken off at their stumps and floated down into the valley. Large sections of The trail were erased and other parts blocked by giant palm logs. At some points, debris was deposited up to 30' about the normal creek level. The rain gauge structure that had been in the canyon for 50 years was also washed away!

APRIL TOURNAMENT We had a good turnout of 43 contestants for the April 17 - 18 straight doubles tournament. Despite wind and smatterings of rain on Saturday, the tournament turned out well with great weather on Sunday. Jef took these pictures of the winners. Jan McNamara won the $50 drawing. Congratulations, Jan!

RUMMAGE SALEMembers are encouraged to save up their jun.... er.... treasures for the club's rummage sale, scheduled for the weekend after the February tournament, or February 19, 20. Bring your discarded household items, clothes, tools, etc. Remember, one man's junk is another man's treasure.
SAN CLEMENTEThe San Clemente get-together had good weather, according to Betty Minkel. A total of 25 showed up for the mid-September potluck.
A TRIBUTE TO SANDI & BORDEN contributed by Marilyn BeanOnce there was a couple from Baker, Oregon named Sandi and Borden. They decided they wanted a change from the lush, green tennis courts of Baker, so they stumbled upon a place in the desert called Borrego Springs. The property consisted of four old courts with old nets and a lot of old tennis players. The clubhouse was run down, the roof leaked, the kitchen was in bad shape, and the restrooms needed some updating. Then there were the grounds—and that’s exactly what it was—just ground.
So, Sandi and Borden said, "Let’s buy this place. After all, it is California real estate. It’s hot in the summer and has lots of cacti, and strange animals that we don’t see in Baker, and it’s not close to anything." So they bought it. They discovered that from October through April it was a paradise, visited by beautiful and talented tennis players from all over Southern Calif. What a deal! Pretty soon the courts were resurfaced, nets were replaced, the restrooms were bright and clean, and the grounds became colorful and lush with blooms. Pieces of artwork complimented the various cacti. A swimming pool appeared and a forgotten Jacuzzi came to life with warmth and bubbles. The beautiful, talented and fun-loving tennis players thought they had died and gone to Heaven. The clubhouse now has appliances that most of us women would kill for.
Sandi is constantly pleasing our pallets with her delicious potato dishes and sinful brownies, while Borden makes sure everyone gets enough popcorn. When he’s not on the court displaying his impressive tennis shots, you can find him under a sink with a wrench, building a counter top or installing new light fixtures.
We’re so glad the Grangers decided to venture from Baker to Borrego. We love them, appreciate them, and thank them for everything they’ve done and continue to do to make this place so beautiful and so much fun.

MEMBER HEALTHDick Stadelbacher had heart surgery over the summer. He had numerous complications, but by mid-August, he was fairly well recovered. Unfortunately, he may have to continually carry oxygen around due to emphysema. According to the Carole, JaNell Acosta was in a terrible auto accident in mid-August coming back from Yosemite. She broke her pelvis, and although back at home had some severe mobility problems. However, Betty says she can now get around without a walker. She'll be running circles around us in no time!

"My husband, not happy with my mood swings, bought me a mood ring the other day so he would be able to monitor my mood swings. When I'm in a good mood, it turns green. When I'm in a bad mood, it leaves a big f---in' red mark on his forehead.
Maybe next time he'll buy me a diamond."
