MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

The BSTC Christmas Present

Dear Friends,

For Christmas, we would like to help a family in Borrego Springs that has had their spirit challenged, but we present it to all of you and hope you will come in with your club officers and make this from the BSTC members.

The mother's name is Faviola, her childrens' names are Ivin (6), Eric (2), and a baby girl Carol, two months old.

Carl, their husband and father, was killed in an auto accident in September. Carol was born three weeks later. I understand he was a good father and husband. He was and had been working for the architect/artist John Rithen (spelling ?) for 12 years. While they were having Carl's funeral, their house was flooded and damaged by the storm that washed out Palm Canyon and some of Anza Country Club.

The bottom line is to share the spirit of the Holidays with good people we're proud to call our friends. If you'll join us in this gift from the heart, bring the following with you to the Dec. 4th tournament:

  • clothing
  • non-perishable food items
  • Christmas gifts
  • baby things
  • perhaps a Christmas tree
  • money
  • bedding
for a surprise donation to the family by a BSTC representative group the week before Christmas.

If any of you want to help us organize and do other needed tasks, please let me know. For now, I will be the focal person to contact.

Sincerely
Fred and Susan Dow fsdow@yahoo.com

NOVEMBER TOURNAMENT

We had a medium turnout of 38 contestants for the November 6 - 7 mixed doubles tournament. The weather was ideal, and we all enjoyed playing and viewing some fine tennis. Jef and Dave did the draw for the first time. Despite the few rookie glitches, the tournament was successful. Jef took these pictures of the winners.

TOURNAMENT NEWS

Perfect weather provided the backdrop of another great weekend. Yellow chinchweed flowers (Pectis papposa) provided a headstart of the flower season. Chinchweed is normally only seen after summer thunder showers, but due to unusual dousings in September and October, these wildflowers survived into the fall. Indians once used these plants in their cooking for the aromatic odor produced by the plant's oil glands. Everyone enjoyed the newly refurbished clubhouse, and appreciate the hard work done by the Grangers. Jim Gilloon won the $50 drawing. Congratulations, Jim!

MEMBER HEALTH

John Schultz is slated for a knee replacement in January. The Bristlins were not up to playing in the November tournament due to various ailments, but came out, anyway. Dick Stadelbacher didn't show up either. Hope he's recovering well from his summer heart surgery, but we'll find out in December when he and Carole come down for the tournament. Gladys Lehman is hobbling around on the new knee she got in October. The Lehmans will join us for the January tournament.

Could be worse...

A mother passing by her daughter's bedroom was astonished to see the bed was nicely made and everything was picked up. Then she saw an envelope propped up prominently on the center of the bed. It was addressed, "Mom." With the worst premonition, she opened the envelope and read the letter with trembling hands:

Dear Mom,

It is with great regret and sorrow that I'm writing you. I had to elope with my new boyfriend because I wanted to avoid a scene with Dad and you. I've been finding real passion with John and he is so nice - even with all his piercings, tattoos, beard, and his motorcycle clothes. But it's not only the passion mom, I'm pregnant and John said that we will be very happy. He already owns a trailer in the woods and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter. He wants to have many more children with me and that's now one of my dreams, too.

John taught me that marijuana doesn't really hurt anyone and we'll be growing it for us and trading it with his friends for all the cocaine and ecstasy we want. In the meantime, we'll pray that science will find a cure for AIDS so John can get better; he sure deserves it!! Don't worry Mom, I'm 15 years old now and I know how to take care of myself.

Some day I'm sure we'll be back to visit so you can get to know your grandchildren.

Your daughter,
Judith

PS : Mom, none of the above is true. I'm over at the neighbor's house. I just wanted to remind you that there are worse things in life than my report card that's in my desk drawer. I love you! Call when it is safe for me to come home.
