MARCH 12 - 13, 2005 TOURNAMENT - MIXED DOUBLES

The next tournament will be the weekend of March 12 - 13, 2005. This is in the high point of a very busy season, so getting reservations may be difficult, if you haven't got them already. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 7:30 p.m. on the eve of the tournament. Signup at clubhouse, or contact Jef: phone 760-767-4544, e-mail: jef@znet.com, or Dave Quimby: phone 760-767-4283, e-mail: dmquimby@cox.net. If all else fails, call the tennis center at 760-767-0577 the Friday night before the tournament (before 8 p.m.). The draw will be completed by 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday at 8:00 A.M. If you want us to call you with the start time, add your phone number with your name when you sign up. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

SATURDAY POTLUCK

The happy hour/potluck will occur 6:30/7 p.m., Saturday night, March 12, 2005, at the tennis center. If you want to contribute to the door prizes, remember to place them in the door prize area before dinner.

DELAYED FINAL

Pete Azar and Joel Andersen met the Freds Sunday afternoon on February 13th, and won in a close tie-breaker. This completed one of the 2 rainouts of the December tournament. The women's final should be completed in March with the return of the Lisaks. If all contestants are not there in March, the finals will be completed during the April tournament, with substitutes, if necessary.

BORREGO NEWS

Borrego got hit with another major storm, getting rain all day Monday, February 21st, and heavy rains just before sunrise on the 23rd. Wildflowers will be spectacular on the weekend of the tournament.

RUMMAGE SALE

To all,

The BSTC Rummage sale took place on Saturday, February 19th, a week after our February tournament. It was a nearly forgotten annual sale that hadn't been done in over ten years Old timers in the valley that had nothing to do with the club except coming to this sale remember it as being the best in the valley and it was again. Its resurrection was a resounding success. If I haven't already thanked you for contributing your treasures, I do so now.

To, Borden & Sandy Granger, Jim Gilloon, Jack & Betty Minkel, Ken & Jackie Shallahamer, Jim & Carmen Perez, Ron & Mary Kay Romeo, Pete & Trish Azar, Jef Johnson, and my wife Susan, You are the ones that made it happen. You pulled it off by managing this sale with aplomb. A special THANK-YOU. I'm sure some of you would admit it was a lot of fun as much as it was a lot of work. I know I came away from it richer for the experience. It was also done in some of the worst weather Borrego Springs has ever had and some of the most dramatic displays of nature we'll likely see. You were there and you made it happen despite the elements while others in the valley cancelled their own rummage sales. You gave up your time and you unselfishly volunteered your energies so all in the club would benefit. You certainly deserve more than a grateful pat on the back, and you stand out as a class act in an already special class of tennis club member.

We also owe a special THANKS to the Grangers for providing their facility at no cost to us for this weekend happening. Without the use of their facility, special equipment and materials, and their seeming tireless assistance our sale would not have occurred. Thank you, Borden and Sandy.

Your President,
Fred Dow
Ken reported that more than $1000 was collected, despite the bad weather. The following pictures were taken after the big rush, which was over by 9:30. Before that, the parking lot was overflowing!

Puddles from earlier rain are still visible. Rain came again about 10:30 that morning.

FEBRUARY TOURNAMENT

We had a good turnout of 46 contestants for the February 12 - 13, 2005 straight doubles tournament. Weather was perfect with highs in the 70s, no wind, and scenic clouds leftover from storms from the previous day! Jef took these pictures of the winners with Ken's camera. Tom McClure won the $50 drawing. Congratulations, Tom!

TRAGIC LOSS - relayed from Fred Dow

David Mears, 47, son of Tom and Ellie Mears, died less than 2 weeks ago. He was skiing in the mountains with friends near Gunnerson, Colorado where he has lived and worked as an architect for over 3 years. He lost consciousness on the mountain and could not be revived. His wife and two girls, 6 and 9 years old, survive him. For those who wish to send condolences by mail or in person, they may be contacted at:

MEMBER HEALTH

John Schultz, unfortuneately, had a staph infection, after his knee replacement, and had to be re-hospitalized, and may need the surgery re-done. When last Harriet reported, on Feb. 17, he was in hospital staging area, since all beds were taken at the hospital! Karyn came down to help, as Harriet was being overwhelmed. Al Lieb, after his shoulder surgery in December, was seen hitting the ball during the February tournament. Terry Moy's knee is still recovering. Harold is out of the hospital and back home. Dave Quimby's hip has been bothering him, and he skipped playing in February. Jef fractured his foot on the tennis court February 25th and will miss the March tournament.

SAN CLEMENTE

Our annual campout at San Clemente State Beach is set for September 23 - 26. Some of us arrive a day or two earlier, and stay later. If you would like to join us, you must make reservations either via the internet or by phone. The campground fills up quickly on weekends, so it is important to get reservations early. The earliest date to make reservations for September is Tuesday, March 1 at 5:00 a.m. PST. Last year, many who waited only a few hours after that, did not get reservations. So try to call early if you plan to come! You may make reservations on the internet at www.reserveamerica.com or phone 800-444-7275. Ask for the hook-up area and ask for senior rate, if you qualify.

We hope to see you in San Clemente for a weekend of camping, tennis, beach, and fellowship. We usually plan a group potluck on Saturday night, also. Carmen and Marilyn suggest trying to get campsites that have numbers in the 60s.
