APRIL TOUR OF BAJA PLANTS

18 partook in Jef's tour of El Divisadera, Norm Robert's hilltop house that featured a number of desert plants not normally found in Borrego. These included the Mexican Boojum tree, or Cirio, and the world's largest cactus, the Cardón. Below is a picture of the group checking out the views at the top.

BORREGO NEWS

Temperatures this past summer reached 118°F. During August, thunder showers caused flooding in parts of Borrego. After a cool spell hit Borrego in early September, temperatures have been mild in Borrego. A massive thunderstorm hit Borrego on the nights of October 16 and 17, keeping the desert verdant. Some wildflowers are still present! Expect pleasant weather for our first tournament. Borrego Days festival will be the weekend prior to our first tournament.

APRIL TOURNAMENT

We had a good turnout of 54 contestants for the April 16 - 17, 2005 straight doubles tournament. Weather was not too hot for this time of year, with highs in the vicinity of 90°F each day. Dave Quimby assisted Jef for the last time in doing the draw -- A thankless job that anyone is invited to do (hint, hint). Volunteers are always welcome! Jef took these pictures of the winners. Denny Bean won the $50 drawing, but transferred it to the Grangers with a suggestion they donate it to their favourite charity in the name of the BSTC!. The Borrego community thanks you, Denny! Pictures below are by Jef. Sorry Marilyn and Terry -- pictures didn't come out, so these are file photos:

APRIL BANQUET

Marilyn Bean organized the finale banquet for the season. Cuisine was Italian and catered by Bernard's. About 75 joined us for this event, which included the transition between presidents, Fred Dow to Gary Edwards. Denny Bean got a gag gift related to senior bicycle safety (apparently, he's had one too many accidents). The gift bag included training wheels, a first aid kit, and a bicycle safety for seniors -- the sole content: "Never mind -- call dial-a-ride". Pete Azar, for the 3rd time, received the John Schultz Perpetual Ball in the Mouth Trophy, from Sandi Granger, who held it for 2 years. Sandi received it from our late president, Jim Rathbun during the April banquet in 2003. Pete said something to the effect that Dottie was wearing the same dress he saw her in last, 4 years prior.

MEMBER HEALTH

Barbara McClure was hit head on by a negligent driver while leaving a tennis club in Temecula on the week of the April tournament. The impact of the steering wheel caused her insides to shift, but although being in terrific pain, she is expected to make a full recovery. We hope to see her on the tennis courts next season! John Schultz had cataract surgery in April and has reported spectacular improvement in his sight. He is also much improved because of recent back therapy, and his 2nd knee surgery will happen in May. He also has severe Carpal Tunnel syndrome in both forearms, as well as having a marginal left rotator cuff, but only needs that part working well enough to toss the ball for the serve. He claims he will come back next November like a "holy terror"!! He hopes these will be "former" maladies to share with us next November. Dave Quimby has recovered from his Staph infection and is scheduled for hip replacement surgery in December. He was out and about in Borrego this past weekend.

CHANGES

John Schultz has changed his e-mail to jhschultz@adelphia.net. Other changes have occurred, too.... but I forgot. Wow, am I a bad newsletter guy, or what?

SAN CLEMENTE

Supposedly this happened in September, but no reporter was present. Somebody is doing a bad job with the newsletter. Perhaps somebody else should step in? (hint, hint).

You decide to:
    A. Present it to the President of the United States.
    B. Present it to the Secretary General of the United Nations.
