FEBRUARY 18 - 19, 2006 TOURNAMENT - STRAIGHT DOUBLES
The next tournament will be the weekend of February 18 - 19, 2006. This is peak season, so get lodging reservations early. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 7:30 p.m. on the eve of the tournament. Sign-up at the clubhouse, or contact Jef: phone 760-767-4544, e-mail: jef@itforsb.net, or if all else fails, call the tennis center at 760-767-0577 the Friday night before the tournament (definitely before 8 p.m.). The draw will be completed by around 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. If you want us to call you with the start time, add your phone number with your name when you sign up. Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
SATURDAY POTLUCKThe happy hour/potluck will occur 6:30/7 p.m., Saturday night, February 18, 2006, at the tennis center. If you want to contribute to the door prizes, remember to place them in the door prize area before dinner.
JANUARY 13 HIKEJef and Kathy led a 4.7 mile, 230' vertical, hike along Coyote Creek from 1st to 2nd crossings. This also included a side trip to Desert Gardens. Two other hikers came besides Jef and Kathy: Denny Bean and Susan Dow. Early in the hike, water was flowing past 1st crossing, but after returning a couple hours later, the flow had stopped about 1/4 mile upstream from there.
FEBRUARY 17th HIKEJef and Kathy will lead another (approximately 2 hour) hike on the Friday before the tournament. There may be up to 45 minutes of driving time (each way) to reach the hike area, depending on the selected location. Meet in the parking lot in front of the clubhouse on Palm Canyon Drive at 9 a.m. on Friday, if you wish to come along. Plan on returning by noon.

JANUARY TOURNAMENT We had a good turnout of 49 contestants for the January 14 - 15, 2006 mixed doubles tournament. Weather was just fine, with not too much wind and ideal temperatures. Gary Edwards did most of the work when assisting Jef in organizing the tournament. When the first drawing failed to have the winner in attendance, Mary Kae Romeo won the $50. After Jef announce he was engaged to Kathy, however, the Romeos presented this money as a wedding present! Congratulations and thanks, Mary Kae!

SAN CLEMENTE CAMPOUTIt's time to think about our annual San Clemente Campout. We have two suggestions for dates - either the weekend of Sep 16 & 17 or the weekend of Sep 23 & 24. Think about these dates and be prepared to vote on the date you prefer at the February Borrego tournament. We will decide then.
If you would like to join us camping at San Clemente State Beach, you must make reservations either via the internet or by phone. The campground fills up quickly on weekends, so it is important to get reservations early. The earliest date to make reservations for September is Wednesday, March 1 at 8:00 A.M. PST. If you do not make them that day, you may not get reservations. You may make reservations on the internet at www.reserveamerica.com or by phone at 1-800-444-7275. As for the hook-up area and ask for senior rate, if you qualify for that.
We hope to see many of you in San Clemente for a weekend of camping, tennis, beach and fellowship. We usually plan a group potluck on Saturday night. Some of us arrive a day or two early and/or stay another day or two. Come join us in San Clemente!
MEMBER HEALTHBarbara McClure hit some tennis balls during the last tournament and will hopefully be playing in our tournaments soon. Dave Quimby is still incapacitated, but now Mary will be as well after her surgery.

RECYCLED E-MAIL JOKE circulated by Kim, 9-2-97The new Euro LanguageThe European Union commissioners have announced that agreement has been reached to adopt English as the preferred language for European communications, rather than German, which was the other possibility.
As part of the negotiations, the British government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a five-year phased plan for what will be known as EuroEnglish (Euro for short).
In the first year, "s" will be used instead of the soft "c"Sertainly, sivil servants will resieve this news with joy. Also, the hard"c" will be replaced with "k". Not only will this klear up konfusion, but typerwriters kan have one less letter.
There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, then the troublesome "ph" will be replace by "f". This will make words like "fotograf" 20 per sent shorter.
In the third year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Govemments will enkorage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of silent "e"s in the languag is disgrasful, and they would go.
By the fourth year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" by "z" and "w" by "v".
During ze fifz year, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou", and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters. After zis fifz yer, ve vil hav a reli snsibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubls or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech ozer. Ze drem vil finali kum tru.
