REMEMBERING BOB AND VIVIAN HUGULEY by Mary Quimby
Borrego Springs Tennis Club lost a valued former member with the passing of Bob Huguley on March 17, 2006. Bob and his wife Vivian, parents of Louie Huguley, who was the BSTC organizer and builder of the Club facility, contributed so much to the success of the club in earlier days through 1993. After lots of “gentle” prodding from Louie, Bob and Vivian began playing tennis in the mid 70’s. They worked hard to develop their games and thoroughly enjoyed playing. This new interest in tennis, coupled with Bob’s experience in the construction business and a desire to support son Louie’s dream to create a tennis club, led to Bob’s helping to construct the BSTC complex.
With the Club completed, Bob and Vivian built a home in Borrego and stepped up their involvement. Some of their volunteer contributions included:
- Cleaning the facility, including the kitchen and bathrooms
- Maintaining the landscaping, including planting, irrigating, trimming, and raking
- Shopping for supplies and materials
- Performing general maintenance jobs
- Maintaining the membership board
- Preparing Saturday lunches—sandwiches, chips, beverages, and cookies for $3.50
- Providing fresh lemonade or punch and ice and homemade goodies
- Hosting the October Halloween potluck at their new home in Borrego
- Creating the Tennis Talk newsletter using their own computer, printer, and photocopier
BOB HUGULEY, 1921 - 2006
They typed all of the articles, added cartoons, graphics and photos, photocopied the pages, manually collated and stapled the booklets, stuffed them in envelopes, created and affixed address labels, added postage, and rushed to the post office!
Their last Borrego Springs Tennis Talk was prepared for the May 29-30, 1993, tournament.
In addition to all of this work, Bob and Vivian played in many tournaments and were competitive in their divisions. Bob’s game took him to the finals several times.
How fortunate our Club was to have had the support of these two generous and involved members.
If you wish to communicate with Vivian, she can be reached

Brief summary from Union Tribune obituary: Bob Huguley passed away March 17, 2006. He was born in San Diego. Just before the war, he married Vivian, and stayed with her for his last 66 years. During WWII, he started as an aircraft assembler for Convair. Then was a career firefighter for the San Diego Fire Department for 35 years, reaching Battalion Chief. After retiring in 1978, he became involved with architecture, construction, and real estate. He oversaw construction of motels and luxury homes. Before retiring from the Fire Department, he was enthusiastic about baseball, coaching little league for his son's team. After retiring to Borrego and being involved with the tennis club, in 1993 he moved to Sun City West, where he lived the rest of his life. He is survived by Vivian, 2 sons (Bob Jr. and Marvin -- Louie), and daughter Lois Jacobs, as well as 4 grandchildren. We've missed him for these last 12+ years, and are thankful for his many contributions to the club.
MARCH 24 HIKEJef and Kathy forgot they had to lead a hike that Friday. However, Fred Dow drove a small group to hike in Coyote Canyon around Desert Garden and 2nd crossing.
APRIL 21 HIKEAssuming Jef and Kathy don't forget again, they will lead another (approximately 2 hour) hike on the Friday before the tournament. There may be up to 45 minutes of driving time (each way) to reach the hike area, depending on the selected location. Meet in the parking lot in front of the clubhouse on Palm Canyon Drive at 9 a.m. on Friday, if you wish to come along. Plan on returning by noon. If they are 10 minutes or more late.... hey, there's lots of hikes to go on -- just pick a place and go!
CHANGESMark Roybal has just switched his email address from roybal_1@msn.com to markroybal@sbcglobal.net. Mary Quimby pointed out an error in the last few newsletters, where the tennis club link was wrong. The tennis club website has been streamlined and enhanced.
BORREGO NEWSThe Grangers had another fun tournament the week before our March tournament. Several BSTC members got awarded trophies. Men's 3.5: 1st Paul Haberman, 2nd Harold Maier, 3rd Val Schultz. Men's 4.0: 1st Bill Linder, 2nd Jef Johnson, 3rd Jim Fischer. French Open doubles champion, Luke Jenson, was one of 4 tennis pros running a clinic the day before the tournament. 60 people participated, and enjoyed the experience. Local resident, and former Czech soccer star, Jaroslav Medik, assisted as one of the tennis pros.
A fair amount of rain has come to the valley this month. Local plants are very green, and there may still be a fair wildflower display during the next tournament.
A public meeting regarding a proposed development of the ocotillo forest just W of Borrego Springs Road and just N of the unpaved portion of Country Club showed a sound thumbs down by local residents. The Sponsor Group rejected the proposal. At least one ocotillo in this forest is about 30' tall! The developer had proposed cramming 140 or more homes in this area with a tract of sub-acre-sized lots.
MARCH TOURNAMENT We had a good turnout of 47 contestants for the March 25 - 26, 2006 mixed doubles tournament. Weather was great for the whole tournament, except for a little bit of wind at times. Gary Edwards did most of the work when assisting Jef in organizing the tournament -- we keep drawing him back in! Russ Hansen won the $50 prize.
Russ gets prize from Judge Jim. Congratulations Russ!
Olivia drew the winning ticket.

SAN CLEMENTE CAMPOUTThe campout will be held on the weekend of Sep 16 & 17. All camp spots have been reserved, but you could still come, and perhaps spend the night at a local hotel or sharing some of the spots reserved by members of the tennis club. You might also ask the Gilloons, who live nearby, where is a good place to stay.
We hope to see many of you in San Clemente for a weekend of camping, tennis, beach and fellowship. We usually plan a group potluck on Saturday night. Some of us arrive a day or two early and/or stay another day or two. Come join us in San Clemente!
MEMBER HEALTHBarbara McClure seems to be back among the active tennis players! Ron Romeo had a heart attack the week before the last tournament, but had a stent put in, and was playing a bit of tennis the weekend of the tournament! Mary Quimby has been having sleep and pain problems, but seems to be getting better after her February knee replacement. Dave Quimby is scheduled for his new hip just before the next tournament. The Schultz's skipped the last tournament due to bad colds.

RECYCLED E-MAIL JOKE circulated by Liz, Apr 20, 2005Same thingA married Irishman went into the confessional and said to his priest, "I almost had an affair with another woman."
The priest said, "What do you mean, almost?"
The Irishman said, "Well, we got undressed and rubbed together, but then I stopped."
The priest said, "Rubbing together is the same as putting it in. You're not to see that woman again. For your penance, say five Hail Mary's and put $50 in the poor box."
The Irishman left the confessional, said his prayers, and then walked over to the poor box. He paused for a moment and then started to leave.
The priest, who was watching, quickly ran over to him saying, "I saw that. You didn't put any money in the poor box!"
The Irishman replied, "Yeah, but I rubbed the $50 on the box, and according to you, that's the same as putting it in!
