FEBRUARY 17 - 18, 2007 TOURNAMENT - STRAIGHT DOUBLES
The next tournament will be the weekend of February 17 - 18, 2007. This is close to peak season, so you should get lodging reservations early. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 7:30 p.m. on the eve of the tournament. Sign-up at the clubhouse, or contact Jef or Kathy: phone 760-767-4536, e-mail: jef@znet.com, or if all else fails, call the tennis center at 760-767-0577 the Friday night before the tournament (definitely before 8 p.m.). The draw will be completed by around 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. If you want us to call you with the start time, add your phone number with your name when you sign up. Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
SATURDAY APPETIZERS / HAPPY HOUR by Marilyn BeanHere are some suggestions:
Meatballs, chicken wings, vegetable dip, shrimp (I think Terry has this one covered.) Guacamole, taquitos, cheeses, quiche, mini pizzas, etc.
Just wander through your local Costco or Trader Joe's and you'll be amazed what you will find. Or, if you prefer to bring a dessert, that would be OK too. If you know anybody who does not have e-mail, please pass this information to them. And, if you have any questions regarding this format, call Marilyn at 714 525-3214.
Let's all give this a try. It all begins Saturday night at 6:15 at the tennis center. If you want to contribute to the door prizes, remember to place them in the door prize area before dinner.
RUTH JOHNSON MEMORIAL SERVICE
VIVIEN HUGULEYJef was checking his notes and found a big omission from the October newsletter. The following message was received last July from Gary Edwards -- membership was contacted, but it still should have been in the next newsletter:
received July 3 2006:
"Barely 3 months after her husband died, Louie Huguley's mother Vivien passed away this past weekend. She had been hospitalized for a few days. I don't know the cause of death. A service is planned for Thursday, July 6th. I will call Mary Quimby and ask her to send flowers for the club. Louie's phone number is 619-750-9143, cards can be sent to him at P. O. Box 156, Spring Valley, CA 91976. Can you please pass this along to the Borrego Springs e-mail list? I should have a list like that myself, but I've never done that and don't have the time or knowledge to create it now.
Also, last June, Betty Gibson's family also had a death. Betty wrote after receiving the above message:
recieved July 6 2006:
Thanks for the msg. Jeff -- we too have a heartbreak. Our daughter, Donna lost her husband 3 days before Father's Day due to a heart attack. He was 57. Their Kristen's wedding is to be in Aug. Her 2 brothers will walk with her down the aisle. I spent a wk. with them - we're all still in a fog over it all. I'll send a card to Louie - Viviane was certainly a special person.
Sincerely, Betty Gibson
RECORD COLD SPELL
PRE-TOURNAMENT HIKEJef and Kathy were preoccupied last January. They will try to continue the pre-tournament hikes in February. If you wish to attend, meet at the clubhouse on Friday, February 16 at 9 a.m. Plan on no more than a few miles and returning before noon. If they forget again, give them a call at 760-767-4536 at or before 9.
JANUARY 2007 TOURNAMENT We had a fair turnout of 42 contestants for the January 13 - 14 mixed doubles tournament. Weather was cold, but the sun was shining and wind was calm. Gary took over Jef's duties and that made for a flawless draw. Jim Perez was again eloquent in his emceeing elocution, as always, in summarizing the tournament and presenting the awards. Barbara Ash won the $50 drawing. Congratulations, Barbara!
