SAN CLEMENTE CAMPOUTThe next tennis club event is the San Clemente campout on the weekend of September 15 - 16, 2007.
The campground is generally immediately booked up in early March, so if you planned to campout, hopefully you have already reserved a spot.
If you want to check for cancellations, you can check either via the internet at www.reserveamerica.com or by phone at 1-800-444-7275. Ask for senior rate, if you qualify for that.
If it's not too far from where you live, just come for a day or two.
We hope to see many of you in San Clemente for a weekend of camping, tennis, beach and fellowship. We usually plan a group potluck on Saturday night. Some of us arrive a day or two early and/or stay another day or two. Come join us in San Clemente!
BORREGO NEWSThe weather has been fairly nice this spring. Temperatures have only ventured into the 100s for only a few days this year so far, and it looks like June will start off with highs in the 90s. The Grangers have continued to improve the tennis facility. The latest improvements were the finishing of the fountain and the painting of the fireplace and beams in the clubhouse.

APRIL 2007 TOURNAMENT
We had a large turnout of 54 contestants for the April 21 - 22 straight doubles tournament.
Denny suggested a ladder tournament and Jef worked out the details.
The purpose was to do something different, and provide a tool for the seeding committee.
As a seeding tool, however, the format was somewhat flawed. Problems included some people having stronger or weaker partners, and sometimes facing overly strong or weak opponents.
However, some commented that it was a good tool for meeting and playing with new people.
The weather was perfect, except for a little wind Sunday afternoon.
Barry Frahm was the M.C. for the Saturday banquet. Highlights included the unveiling of Jack's "upside down" birthday cake. It made a big splash!
Our Jack, who is still a great player, demonstrated by his being in the finals, had just turned 80!
Ed Ghiorso sang a few Dean Martin songs for us as we had some great steaks, cooked by Ron Romeo, baked salmon, asparagus, and other trimmings.
On Sunday, Ron converted some of the leftovers into an excellent salmon chowder.
At the award ceremony, emcee Jim Perez had a drawing for the 8 who had played in all 6 tournaments this season.
Ken Shallahamer was the lucky recipient of $100.
New president, Marilyn Bean, was chosen to draw the winner of the $50 prize. She joked: "Is it okay if I draw my own name?"
And she jack-knifed in surprise when she, in fact, read her own name! Congratulations, President Marilyn!

WINNER Fred Dow - Jef Johnson | WINNER Dennis Smith - Pete Azar | WINNER Bonnie Wilson - Sandy Kean | WINNER Susan Flores Dow - Gloria Gobar |
RUNNER-UP Curt Hawkins (Borden Granger) - Gary Edwards | RUNNER-UP Jack Minkel Ron Romeo | RUNNER-UP Roz Smyth - Mary Kay Romeo | RUNNER-UP Linda Notholt - Marla Anderson |
Errata: Jef was groggy at end, and so made a few mistakes.
Susan was put in wrong division semis, and actually didn't qualify to play on Sunday -- Jef was looking at semifinalists, saw Gloria won half her sets and finished in lower division, and then saw Susan also won half her games, but failed to note she didn't finish in lower half.
Vicki was originally missed, and should have been Gloria's partner.
Jill needed a sub, and it should have been Kersti taking her place, instead of Vicki.
Gary pointed out that the requirement for finishing in division A to be in finals was not necessary, and so this requirement was dropped from Men's upper qualification.
Sandy didn't object to being in semis, however, and so was not moved straight to finals (otherwise, she would have been Roz's partner).
Penny and others pointed out that the number of set wins should not have been included in rankings, especially since these were abbreviated sets. A few, including Penny, would have moved on to the next day in that case. If we ever have a similar format in the future, it will simplified. Set wins will only be looked at on ties of game wins. Jef apologizes for his mistakes in the design and implementation of the ladder.

SEEDING COMMITTEEDenny Bean, Mary Kay Romeo, Roz Smyth, Barry Frahm, and Jef Johnson as chairman make up the new BSTC Seeding Committee. The purpose is to, as best as possible, make sure people are comfortable playing with and against others in their group. Barry pointed out that most of us are great tennis players, but our mobility is slowly eking away, either thru injury or age. Consistency is another gauge, and while we may be great players some days, some ouf us are not so on others. Since players go up and down, Jef decided to make the 6 player grouping more flexible.
The April ladder tournament helped the committee determine a few players should move up, and a few move down. Although, the players moving down may just be temporary, as some are still recovering from injury.
EMAIL CHANGESThe Stadelbachers have moved from AOL to Google mail. Their addresses are the same, except aol.com is replaced with gmail.com. Check the BSTC contact page for the changes. Jef is still continuing his znet account, but has another account which he will use for tennis club business: jefbstc@gmail.com. Vicki Koerner's contact information was added to the contact page.
NO MORE SNAIL MAIL NEWSLETTERSJef is running out of time, and so has discontinued mailing the newsletter to the 6 people (both former and current members) who don't have e-mail. Linda (Blaemers) Fox has responded by getting her own e-mail account. If anyone wants to do a mailing, just tell Jef, and he will provide his list containing snail mail information. As regular mail is not used so much anymore, he has not obtained most of the new members addresses, however.
