OCTOBER 27 - 28 TOURNAMENT - MIXED DOUBLES

The next tournament will be the weekend of October 27 - 28, 2007. This is the beginning of the season. Borrego Days is a very popular weekend, so it is a good idea to make reservations early. If nothing can be found, call Jef or Kathy at 760-767-4536. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 7:30 p.m. on the eve of the tournament. Sign-up at the clubhouse, or contact Jef or Kathy: phone 760-767-4536, e-mail: jefbstc@gmail.com, or if all else fails, call the tennis center at 760-767-0577 the Friday night before the tournament (definitely before 8 p.m.). The draw will be completed by around 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. If you want us to call you with the start time, add your phone number with your name when you sign up. Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

SATURDAY POTLUCK

We return to our usual potlucks on tournament saturdays. Happy hour commences at 6:30, and dinner will be served at 7:00 or so.

SAN CLEMENTE CAMPOUT

We had a very successful Campout at San Clemente State Beach on Sep 13-17. There were only 17 of us camping in the campground but many of our members, friends and former members stayed in hotels or just came by to say hello, play tennis and join us for the cookout on Saturday. We had 47 people for the Saturday cookout! We had beautiful weather and we all had a great time. Tom & Ellie Mear and Dave & Barbara McCary came by and joined us for some of our activities. Then on Monday former members John & Judy Parrack who moved to Missouri 10 years ago stopped by to say hello. (See attached photo)

BORREGO NEWS

We had another warm summer, getting a fair amount of humidity in July and August. A few storms dropped rain in various parts of Borrego, but not too much near the tennis club. The drought continues, but the end of summer had some tantalizing storms moving thru. Temperatures in September and October have been very mild. The Grangers arrived back in Borrego in early October, after a cross-country tour extending all the way to the east coast, and found the club survived with no major problems.

SUMMER VACATIONS

There is no complete accounting of all the adventures the members of the club had during this summer, but many of us had a great time. The Grangers travelled over the entire country, and e-mailed their accounts of their adventures to many of us. Jef and Kathy had a nice 3 week adventure spanning the eastern Sierras and wine country (see their journal at jefj.com/2007/wk1.html). The Liebs were in Spain last July. But these are but the tip of the iceberg. Many stories await us when we gather back at the club this October.

SEEDING COMMITTEE

Denny Bean, Mary Kay Romeo, Roz Smyth, Barry Frahm, and Jef Johnson as chairman make up the new BSTC Seeding Committee. The purpose is to, as best as possible, make sure people are comfortable playing with and against others in their group. Barry pointed out that most of us are great tennis players, but our mobility is slowly eking away, either thru injury or age. Consistency is another gauge, and while we may be great players some days, some ouf us are not so on others. Since players go up and down, Jef decided to make the 6 player grouping more flexible.

The April ladder tournament helped the committee determine a few players should move up, and a few move down. Although, the players moving down may just be temporary, as some are still recovering from injury.

PRE-TOURNAMENT HIKE

Jef will show up at the tennis club on the Friday before the tournament at 9:00 a.m. If any are interested in a little hike (with transportation to/from club and the hike itself not to exceed 3 hours), please show up in the parking lot between 9 and 9:10. If Jef forgets again, and is not there by 9, call him at 760-767-4536, and remind him. EMAIL CHANGES

The Stadelbachers have moved from AOL to Google mail. Their addresses are the same, except aol.com is replaced with gmail.com. Check the BSTC contact page for the changes. Jef was phasing out his znet account, but changed his mind when he got a price reduction -- a good thing, as so many things are tied to this account. However, before deciding to keep it, he made a gmail account, and found it convenient to send newsletters.

NO MORE SNAIL MAIL NEWSLETTERS

Jef is running out of time, and so has discontinued mailing the newsletter to the 6 people (both former and current members) who don't have e-mail. Linda (Blaemers) Fox has responded by getting her own e-mail account. If anyone wants to do a mailing, just tell Jef, and he will provide his list containing snail mail information. As regular mail is not used so much anymore, he has not obtained most of the new members addresses, however.

APRIL 2007 TOURNAMENT

We had a large turnout of 54 contestants for the April 21 - 22 straight doubles tournament. Denny suggested a ladder tournament and Jef worked out the details. The purpose was to do something different, and provide a tool for the seeding committee. As a tool, however, the format was somewhat flawed. Problems included some people having stronger or weaker partners, and sometimes facing overly strong or weak opponents. Some commented that it was a good tool for meeting and playing with new people. Weather was perfect, except for a little wind Sunday afternoon. Barry Frahm was the M.C. for the Saturday banquet. Highlights included the unveiling of Jack's "upside down" birthday cake. It made a big splash! Our Jack, who is still a great player, demonstrated by his being in the finals, had just turned 80! Ed Ghiorso sang a few Dean Martin songs for us as we had some great steaks, cooked by Ron Romeo, baked salmon, asparagus, and other trimmings. On Sunday, Ron Romeo converted some of the leftovers into an excellent salmon chowder. At the award ceremony, emcee Jim Perez had a drawing for the 8 who had played in all 6 tournaments this season. Ken Shallahamer was the lucky recipient of $100. New presisdent, Marilyn Bean, was chosen to draw the winner of the $50 prize. She joked: "Is it okay if I draw my own name?" And she jack-knifed in surprise when she, in fact, read her own name! Congratulations, President Marilyn!

RESULTS OF APRIL 21, 2007 LADDER

NOTE: results are in starting/ending division / set winning percentage / game winning percentage

Each set consisted of exactly 7 games. Most people played 5 sets, but due to an odd number in the women's ladder, several women only played 4 sets. Upper division for both men and women was A, B, and C. You had to finish in these divisions to qualify for the upper division play-offs the following day. Finalists were those who finished in the appropriate division and won most sets (on ties, most games -- on further ties, finished at highest division). In women's upper division, finalists were 2 highest scoring players who finished in division A.

Errata: Jef was groggy at end, and so made a few mistakes. Bold names indicate player should have qualified for finals or semis: Since Susan was put in wrong division semis, and Jill needed a sub, it should have been Kersti taking her place.

RECYCLED EMAIL JOKE submitted by Fred W, 2-19-2003
Criminal Lawyers Award Contest Winner

A Charlotte, NC lawyer purchased a box of two dozen very rare and expensive cigars, then insured them against fire among other things.

Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of these great cigars, and without yet having made even his first premium payment on policy, the lawyer filed a claim against the insurance company. In his claim, the lawyer stated the cigars were lost "in a series of small fires." The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason: that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion. The lawyer sued....and won!

In delivering the ruling the judge agreed with the insurance company that the claim was frivolous, but stated nevertheless, that the lawyer held a policy from the company in which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure them against fire, without defining what is considered to be "unacceptable fire," and was obligated to pay the claim.

Rather than endure a lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted the ruling and paid $15,000.00 to the lawyer for his loss of the rare cigars lost in the "fires."

NOW FOR THE BEST PART: After the lawyer cashed the check, the insurance company had him arrested on 24 counts of ARSON. With his own insurance claim and testimony from the previous case being used against him, the lawyer was convicted of intentionally burning his insured property and he was sentenced to 24 months in jail and ordered to pay a $24,000 fine.
