STRAIGHT DOUBLES FEBRUARY 16 - 17, 2008 TOURNAMENT
The next tournament will be the weekend of February 16 - 17, 2008. We are now in the middle of the season, so it is a good idea to make reservations early. If nothing can be found, call Jef or Kathy at 760-767-4536. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 7:30 p.m. on the eve of the tournament. Sign-up at the clubhouse, or contact Jef or Kathy: phone 760-767-4536, e-mail: jef@znet.com, or if all else fails, call the tennis center at 760-767-0577 the Friday night before the tournament (definitely before 8 p.m.). The draw will be completed by around 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. If you want us to call you with the start time, add your phone number with your name when you sign up. Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
SATURDAY POTLUCKThe happy hour/potluck will occur 6:30/7 p.m., Saturday night, February 16, 2007, at the tennis center. If you want to contribute to the door prizes, remember to place them in the door prize area before dinner.
BORREGO NEWSOn the weekend of January 26 - 27, Borrego experienced it's most soaking rain in several years. It may be too late to ensure a good flower bloom, however. But it should be at least a fair season. During the week, 3 tornado spouts were reported in Borrego, and the roof on 1 house was blown off! On February 3, heavy winds, rather than the predicted rain, hit Borrego. Weather has continued to be below average so far this year, which will make the next and future tournaments more comfortable for playing tennis. On Sunday, February 3 (Superbowl Sunday), heavy winds hit Borrego, and a few more roofs were blown off and a few trees were felled.
TENNIS CLUB HISTORYJef has started scanning in some old pictures. Among those are photos taken during some of the tennis club hikes:

JANUARY GRANGER CLINIC and TOURNAMENT
Luke Jensen hosted a great clinic on Thursday, January 4. Jaroslav, Mike, and Kenny were the tennis pros that helped, keeping practice going on all 4 courts. Mid-day, Luke and Kenny took on Jaroslav and Mike in an exhibition match. They all played some awesome tennis, but Luke and Kenny prevailed: 6-2, 7-6. The 3 day tournament succeeded, despite stormy weather all weekend, including a good dousing Friday night, and scattered drizzles during play.
SAN CLEMENTE CAMPOUT 2008It's time again to think about our annual campout at San Clemente State Beach. The dates this year are the weekend of September 26, 27, and 28. Come early and/or stay late. March 1 is the first day to get reservations for September either by phone or on the internet. If you do not get in that day, there will probably be no vacancies for the weekend. So, if you would like to join us for a weekend of fun at the beach, call the California Park Reservation system at 800-444-7275 or on the internet at:
Ask for San Clemente SB the nights of September 26 and 27 and before or after, if you wish. Ask for a hook-up site if you want that, and ask for a senior rate, if you qualify. Mark March 1, 2008 at 8:00a.m. on your calendar. Make a reservation and join us at the beach!
RUM CAKE RECIPE - GLADYS LEHMAN (requested by Kathy)1 box yellow cake mix, preferably with pudding in it
¾ c. water
1/3 c. oil
3 eggs
½ c. dark rum (I used whiskey)Mix together according to package directions. Bake in greased bundt (ring) pan @ 325°F about 40 minutes or until top springs back when touched. Cook glaze while cake is baking. When cake is done set on heatproof surface and leave in pan. Pierce top with cooking fork (long tines) all over. Pour ½ of glaze over. Let sit about 30 minutes. Loosen around sides and center and invert onto a cake plate that has a little lip or raised sides. Prick remaining surface and pour rest of glaze over. It stays fresh 3 – 4 days and freezes well. For decoration I sift a little powdered sugar over the top just before serving.
Glaze – put ¾ cube butter, 3 Tbs. Water and ¾ c. sugar in small saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring, and cook about 5 minutes. Cool a bit and add 3/8 c. rum.

RECYCLED EMAIL JOKE submitted by Fred W, Dec 23, 2001A Russian couple was walking down the street in Moscow one night, circa 1955, when the man felt a drop hit his nose. "I think it's raining", he said to his wife. "No, that felt more like snow to me", she replied. "No, I'm sure it was just rain" he said.Well, as these things go, they were about to have a major argument about whether it was raining or snowing. Just then they saw a Communist Party official walking toward them.
"Let's not fight about it", the man said, "Let's ask Comrade Rudolph whether it's officially raining or snowing". As the official approached, the man said,"Tell us, Comrade Rudolph, is it officially raining or snowing?" "It's raining, of course", he replied, and walked on.
But the woman insisted: "I know that felt like snow!", to which the man quietly replied: "Rudolph the Red, knows rain, dear".
