MARCH 8 - 9, 2008 TOURNAMENT - MIXED DOUBLES
The next tournament will be the weekend of March 8 - 9, 2008. Jef is planning a new format round robin, and plans to keep courts going 100% of the time for 12 hours: 8 to 5 or 6 on Saturday and 8 to 10 or 11 on Sunday. Everyone will be guaranteed at least 3 hours of play -- 30 minutes at a time -- unless we have more than 64 players. Up to 5 minutes of warm-up will be allowed, but people will opt for less each round. The next team on each court will inform the currently playing teams, at or within 1 minute of the end of the 30 minutes, that they will be playing soon. The game started before the warning can be completed. After about 6 rounds, the one randomly generated division will be split into about 4 divisions with players of similar abilities, hopefully. It will be similar to a ladder with some players going between divisions all the way to the last round, based on performance in prior round. Half the players in each division (3/4 in upper and lower divisions) who win or lose by the smallest margins will stay in the same division. This will limit sinking or rising too fast, but players who are out of place will rise or fall fairly fast. The score is the number of wins minus the number of losses. The average score will, therefore, be ZERO. All sorts of compensating factors could be done, such as reducing the absolute value of scores, when players play in divisions other than the one they wind up in, but we probably won't do this, as it would then be too hard on Peg (the tournament director). The 4 players in each of the 4 divisions with the best overall performance (highest scores) will be paired to play in 4 finals. The finals will be 8 game pro sets.
We are now in peak season, so it is a good idea to make reservations ASAP. If nothing can be found, call Jef or Kathy at 760-767-4536. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 7:30 p.m. on the eve of the tournament. Sign-up at the clubhouse, or contact Jef or Kathy: phone 760-767-4536, e-mail: jef@znet.com, or if all else fails, call the tennis center at 760-767-0577 the Friday night before the tournament (definitely before 8 p.m.). The draw will be completed by around 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. If you want us to call you with the start time, add your phone number with your name when you sign up. Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
SATURDAY POTLUCKThe happy hour/potluck will occur 6:30/7 p.m., Saturday night, March 8, 2008, at the tennis center. If you want to contribute to the door prizes, remember to place them in the door prize area before dinner.

BORREGO NEWS This will be a good flower season, as January and February rains have grown a green carpet in the valley. Expect some nice flowers for each of the last 2 tournaments this year! On the Sunday afternoon after the last tournament, Jef went hiking up Palm Canyon with a small group, and noted a number of flowers starting to come out. Even more were seen the following weekend in Henderson Canyon. Flowers in full bloom already: Monkey, Poppy, Primrose, Desert dandelion and chickory, Phacaelias, lupines. Brittlebush, verbena, wishbone, chuparosa, and ocotillo are starting to come out. Some cacti, cheesebush are sending out flower buds. Click on links at right to see more pictures of these hikes.

FEBRUARY 2008 TOURNAMENT We had a heavy turnout with 59 contestants (29 men, 30 women) for a weekend with perfect weather. Several members shared their adventures of barely getting to the club when a freak snowstorm blanketed the mountains on February 14. Apparently not many people realize that one should not go thru Ranchita when roads are icey. The local alternate route is to continue on S-2 to "Scissors Crossing" and get to Borrego via highway 78. Due to the severe weather, even this way was frought with danger, but much less than going thru Ranchita. Borden told us all of his problems, caused by a few complainers, that may adversely affect the club's use of the facility in the near future. Alan Swartz won the $50 drawing. Congratulations, Al!

RECYCLED EMAIL JOKE submitted by Fred W, Feb 20, 2003MY FORGETTERMy forgetter's getting better
But my rememberer is broke
To you that may seem funny
But, to me, that is no joke. For when I'm "here" I'm wondering
If I really should be "there".
And, when I try to think it through,
I haven't got a prayer!Oft times I walk into a room,
Say, "What am I here for?"
I wrack my brain, but all in vain
A zero, is my score. At times I put something away
Where it is safe, but, Gee!
The person it is safest from
Is, generally, me!At tennis I may see someone,
Say "Hi" and have a chat,
Then, when the person walks away
I ask myself "Who the heck was that?"On the court is the worst,
When the score we all discuss,
Four different ideas have we,
Gosh, it makes me want to cuss!Yes, my forgetter's getting better
While my rememberer is broke,
And it's driving me plumb crazy
And that isn't any joke.
