OCTOBER 24 - 25, 2009 MIXED DOUBLES TOURNAMENT

The next tournament will be the weekend of October 24 - 25, 2009. The format will return to the standard double elimination format. As this is "Borrego Days" weekend, it is a good idea to make reservations VERY early, like in May! If nothing can be found, call Jef or Kathy at 760-767-4536. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 7:30 p.m. on the eve of the tournament. Sign-up at the clubhouse, or contact Jef or Kathy: phone 760-767-4536, e-mail: jef@znet.com, or if all else fails, call the tennis center at 760-767-0577 the Friday night before the tournament (definitely before 8 p.m.). The draw will be completed by around 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. If you want us to call you with the start time, add your phone number with your name when you sign up. Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

SATURDAY POTLUCK / HAPPY HOUR
As usual, we will have our potluck on the first day, Saturday, of the tournament. Happy hour starts at 6:30 p.m. and dining starts about 7 p.m. If you have door prizes to give away, put them in the "door prize area" before the dinner.

BORREGO NEWS
Borrego was rocked with 2 quakes in April of magnitude 3 and 4. Normally, you can't feel these small quakes, but these occurred only a few miles from Borrego. People were running for doorways during the magnitude 4 tremblor.

We had an unusual summer. It was very dry in most parts of the region, with virtually no rainfall downtown, although one storm dropped over 1" in 1 hour in Ocotillo Wells. The first week of August was very dry and unseasonally cool, but temperatures in the last half of the month were very high, getting up into the high 110s. However, overall the summer was not humid, but for a few days. Very unusual, but very nice for those who spent the summer in Borrego.

More statues have been erected in the valley, including some full-sized dinosaurs.

The faltering economy has left a fair number of unfinished and abandoned houses and some foreclosures, as in most of the rest of the country.

October 23th-25th (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) is the Borrego Days festival, featuring:

Friday 6:30 - 9:00a.m.: Rotary Club welcome breakfast at "the Mall"

Friday 5:30p.m.: Mill Borrego Pageant and Installation of New Mayor at BS High School Gym

Saturday 10a.m. to about noon: the parade down Palm Canyon Drive with the theme "Starry, Starry Nights" due to Borrego getting a "Dark Skies Community" designation. Palm Canyon Drive from the XL gas station to the circle will be closed during the parade, as will Country Club Drive in the back of the Mall.

Saturday 9a.m. to Sunday 3p.m.: Arts and crafts, food, retail booths and KidZone at Christmas Circle

Saturday 11a.m.: BSPAC Wine tasting at Borrego Outfitters (benefits local performing arts)

Saturday 10a.m. to 4pm: Sidewalk Sale at Center Mall

Saturday 11a.m. to 2p.m.: Open House at the Library

Saturday 1p.m. to Sunday at noon: Open House at the Paleo & Archaeology Labs

Saturday 11p.m.: International Dark Sky Community Ceremony followed by reception at the Library

Sunday 6:30a.m. to 10a.m.: Lions Club Pancake breakfast at the Elementary School

After a very warm September, temperatures early in October are currently very moderate with highs in the 80s, and hopefully we should have great weather for the tournament.

APRIL 2009 TOURNAMENT

We had a fair turnout for our April tournament with 41 participants: 22 men and 19 women. This tournament was organized in a team-tennis round robin format. 3 teams competed: the Raptors (team captain Joanne Cohen), the Phoebees (team captain Harold Plett), and the Eagles (team captain Jef Johnson). We had good weather, slightly warm with temperatures approaching 90° at the hottest, but only light breezes.

Ann Sheble won the $50 drawing. Congratulations, Ann! Harriet Lisak organized a raffle for a club membership, which was won by Doug Baker.

A DOG'S LIFE

Three Labrador retrievers - one brown, one yellow and one black were sitting in the waiting room at the vet's surgery when they struck up a conversation.

The black lab turned to the brown and said, "So why are you here?"

The brown lab replied, "I'm a pisser. I piss on everything: the sofa, the curtains, the cat, the kids. But the final straw was last night when I pissed in the middle of my owner's bed."

The black lab said, "So what is the vet going to do?"

"Gonna castrate me," came the reply from the brown lab. They reckon it'll calm me down."

The black lab then turned to the yellow lab and asked, "Why are you here?"

The yellow lab said, "I'm a digger. I dig under fences, dig up flowers and trees, I dig just for the hell of it. When I'm inside, I dig up the carpets. But I went over the line last night when I dug a great big hole in my owner's couch."

So what are they going to do to you?" the black lab inquired.

"Looks like I'm going to be castrated too." the dejected yellow lab said.

The yellow lab then turned to the black lab and asked, "Why are you here?"

"I'm a humper," the black lab said. "I'll hump anything. I'll hump the cat, a pillow, the table, postboxes, whatever. I want to hump everything I see. Yesterday, my owner had just got out of the shower and was bending down to dry her toes, and I just couldn't help myself. I hopped on her back and started humping away".

The yellow and brown labs exchanged a sad glance and said, "So, castrating for you too, huh?"

The black lab said, "No, I'm here to get my nails clipped ... "
