The next tournament will be the weekend of January 23 - 24, 2010. The format will again be the standard double elimination format. As this is "the season", it is a good idea to make reservations early. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 7:30 p.m. on the eve of the tournament. Sign-up at the clubhouse, or contact Jef or Kathy: phone 760-767-4536, e-mail: jef@znet.com, or if all else fails, call the tennis center at 760-767-0577 the Friday night before the tournament (definitely before 8 p.m.). The draw will be completed by around 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. If you want us to call you with the start time, add your phone number with your name when you sign up. Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
SATURDAY POTLUCK / HAPPY HOURAs usual, we will have our potluck on the first day, Saturday, of the tournament. Happy hour starts at 6:30 p.m. and dining starts about 7 p.m. If you have door prizes to give away, put them in the "door prize area" before the dinner.
BORREGO NEWSThe December tournament contrasted sharply with the October tournament in that the temperatures were 30° cooler in December. Threatening weather did not affect tennis play during the tournament, but starting Sunday night, Borrego experienced significant rain. Temperatures were downright chilly after these rains, getting down below freezing a few night. January has been nice and warm so far. Ocotillos are green and there are already some wildflowers in the valley.
GRANGER CLINIC and TOURNAMENT
Click for pictorial article of exhibition games featuring tennis pros Gretchen Magers and Murphy JensenOwing to an illness in the family, Luke Jenson was replaced in the clinic by his brother Murphy.
48 players participated in the 8th year of Doubles In The Desert at the Anza Borrego Tennis Center. Sandi had to upgrade the normal scale of 4.0, 3.5, and 3.0 up to 4.1, 4.0, and 3.5, owing to the increasing quality of players this year. The format was a round robin where each player partnered with each player in his/her division, and played a shortened set. Therefore, there was only one winner per division. These are the winners:
Men's 4.1 Men's 4.0 Men's 3.5 Jim Fisher of Redmond, OR Fred Dow of Brea, CA Curtis Hawkins of Fallbrook CA Women's 4.1 Women's 4.0 Women's 3.5 Ursula Hawkins of Fallbrook CA Ronnie Conour of Tucson AZ Peg Lieb of San Diego CA
DECEMBER 2009 TOURNAMENT Turnout was a below-average 36 for this tournament: 14 women and 22 men. Since there were only enough women for one division, the men's draw was done to put equally capable teams in it's 2 divisions, and the winner of each division played each other to determine a winning team. This was another experiment, that is not having multiple divisions based on ability. Consequently, there was only 1 mens and 1 womens winner.
Skies were cloudy during the awards presentation, which immediately followed two great (close) back-to-back matches that determined the winner of the men's Jingles bracket. The women's Belle bracket was one-sided, as Ursula and Mary Kay turned the tables on Bonnie and Jan, who had easily won in their first encounter. Four drawings were held after the tournament, and winners were announced by emcee Don Wilson: Sheldon Baker won a free tournament, Jan McNamara and Hal Cohen won hats, and Jef Johnson won the $50 drawing. Congratulations Jef, Hal, Jan and Sheldon!

RECYCLED EMAIL JOKE submitted by John Schultz Dec 27, 2008BAIL OUTYoung Chuck in Montana bought a horse from a farmer for $100. The farmer agreed to deliver the horse the next day. The next day he drove up and said, 'Sorry son, but I have some bad news, the horse died.'
Chuck replied, 'Well, then just give me my money back.'
The farmer said, 'Can't do that. I went and spent it already'
Chuck said, 'Ok, then, just bring me the dead horse.'
The farmer asked, 'What ya gonna do with him?
Chuck said, 'I'm going to raffle him off.'
The farmer said, 'You can't raffle off a dead horse!'
Chuck said, 'Sure I can, Watch me. I just won't tell any body he's dead.'
A month later, the farmer met up with Chuck and asked, 'What happened with that dead horse?'
Chuck said, 'I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at two dollars a piece and made a profit of $998..'
The farmer said, 'Didn't anyone complain?'
Chuck said, 'Just the guy who won. So I gave him his two dollars back.'
Chuck grew up and works now for the government. He was the one who figured out how to "bail us out".
