As you can see, we did complete the February Tournament in spite of rain Saturday afternoon & evening and high winds Saturday night & Sunday morning. For various reasons, some people had to leave before the tournament was completed and were replaced by the substitutes shown above in parenthesis. Thanks to all of you who volunteered to be a substitute and allowed us to continue the tournament.
The winner of the $50 prize after the February Tournament finals was Dave Quimby. Congratulations, Dave!

The next tournament will be held on March 14 & 15. Since the Team Tennis Tournament was rained out in January, we will have a Team Tennis Tournament in March. The team captains have been chosen and will be selecting their teams on Friday night, March 13. All players must sign up by Friday night at 8:00P.M. since selection of teams will begin at 8:30P.M. The pay phone at the tennis center has been removed, so you can no longer call that number to sign up. Yaroslav Medek, the tournament director, came by the Tennis Center to invite us to play in the Borrego Springs Chamber of Commerce Grapefruit Festival Tennis Tournament. It will be held April 4 & 5 at the Borrego Springs Resort Hotel Tennis Club which is located at 1112 Tilting T Drive. If you are interested in entering, there are some entry blanks at our tennis center or you may call the Borrego Springs Resort Hotel at 1-888-8BORREGO for information. The deadline to enter is March 30. The cost is $20 for singles and $30 per team for doubles.
The Borrego Springs Tennis Center went through foreclosure and reverted back to a previous owner. The current owner, William Bame, came by the tennis center during our last tournament. He has agreed to allow us to conduct our last two tournaments of the season as per our previous agreement. Our board will continue to negotiate with Mr. Bame as to next season. We are hopeful that some repairs will be made around the tennis center soon and that we can reach an agreement with him for next year.
A group of nine members hiked to Palm Canyon on Friday morning. The weather was beautiful, there was quite a bit of water in the stream, we saw some wildflowers in bloom and we had a pleasant hike to the waterfall. On the return trip, we took the alternate trail and were surprised by a group of 15 bighorn sheep right on the trail! We had never seen them that close and were able to obtain some terrific photographs. It was a group of four mature rams and several ewes and some lambs. Look for our photos on the bulletin board next month.
We will have a March hike on Friday morning, March 13 at 8:00A.M. The destination will depend on where the wildflowers are in bloom. Because of the frequent rains, the desert is green and there are lots of wildflowers in bloom or about ready to bloom. In February, we saw fields of sand verbena, evening primrose, brown-eyed primrose and desert sunflowers. We hope that March will be even more beautiful. If you are interested in joining us, meet at the tennis center campground at 8:00A.M.
