MOJAVE CANNON PARTY

October, 1997

The Mojave cannon party of October 17-19 was unusual in that the road was pretty much obliterated by flash floods. Several people got stuck coming upwash. The road by the site was 2 foot lower than it was last April. Mark brought up a little Ford car, and Raymo got his motor-home up, however. Paco ferried and assisted people with Big Red. And only a couple of people parked near the main road.

You can see the effect of flooding over the summer. Picture at left is taken from a previous cannon party. Note the change in same area on right: Mark's car's roof is almost even with the top of the newly-carved wash bank.

At this event, there was one BBM shot, from the originally BBM. This happened Sunday morning, after Jef found a used bowling ball in the desert. Noone had actually brought any bowling balls!

None of about 10 cannon shots from Paco's cannon, actually hit the target. No other big cannons were present at this event. Shown is a dusk shot on Saturday evening.

photo N/A The camo kids had at least one very successful rocket plane shot, along with the usual number of catastrophic failures.

Jef, the master of disaster, had 2 unsuccessful rocket launches. The 2 pound orangutan shot sent the orangutan 10' in air, before 3 concurrent D-rockets continued pretty much in the same direction (up) for another 1000', despite having no stabilizers, and a blue teddy bear fastened to a D rocket wound up going mostly horizontal and landing 5 feet from Raymo's motor home, and Jef and his friend, even though the rocket was launched a presumably safe 50 feet away.

Mark got breakfast going over his 'cannon party' grill, and we had flapjacks, eggs, and bacon on Sunday morning. Here he is with his new 'bullet splitter' target.
