On September 29, flew to Denver and interviewed south of there with Honeywell. Unfortuneately, I came down with a bad cold just before the interview started, and so not a good interview. Probably should have cancelled.

Also in September, flew to Philadelphia PA, and interviewed with Fischer Porter in Wilmington PA.

On the October 5, flew to Huntsville AM, and interviewed with Intergraph. My last officemate at New Mexico Tech, Gopal, had me flown in, and I did get an offer, but wound up going to C.E.S. in Silver Spring, instead.

On October 27, flew to Memphis, and interviewed with Satellite communications company, Cylix. No job.

Also in October:

  • flew to San Francisco and interviewed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory near Livermore
  • flew to Washington DC to interview with Computer Entry Systems in Silver Spring MD
  • flew to Tulsa OK, and interviewed with Citgo (the oil company)

On mid-November, arrived in the DC area from Socorro, looked for and found an apartment north of Silver Spring, Greencastle Gardens. This was near the intersection of Hwy 29 and Briggs-Chaney Rd. Usually walked to work from there. Distance was about 3 miles each way.

During this time, on the 17th, I started my first job after college, to work for Computer Entry Systems (CES). Developed firmware for transaction processing machines.

Summer 1981

Dyer got the idea of going to the junkyard, getting a bike, and restoring it. So I tagged along, got a bike, and restored it.

Below, I'm riding that bike in front of Julie's house, and Julie's old Datsun, which she gave me when she got a new one.

In July, flew from NM to Phoenix to interview at Motorola for my first job. No job.

Motorola was my first job interview, but I hadn't figured out that I needed to wear a suit. After this, I started wearing a more formal outfit, although only thrift store quality.

On July 24, flew from NM to San Diego to interview with NCR. No job, altho 6 years later, I would do a 1 year contract job at the same facility.

On August 22, apparently, I was visiting mom, and got a bum speeding ticket accelerating on an onramp in Dallas, after seeing a movie at a mall (going 55 in an unmarked 40-mph zone!)

Spring 1981

In May, I collected my 2nd masters degree. This one in computer science. I attended another New Mexico Tech graduation ceremony.

Julie made me a special outfit for the occasion.

Completed my last college classes: UNIX Practicum, Analysis of Algorithms, Mathematical Logic, and Data Communications.

Sold my 21' Kencraft trailer to Eddie Humphrey. I was living in Julie's mobil home for previous few months, and continued to live there thruout the summer.

Winter 1981

In January, I think I bought Julie's mobil home after she completely moved to her new house. I let Dyer's mother live in trailer for a few months during this semester.

In February, spent $129 for a 300 baud modem, so that I could do some work at home.

Also in February, I joined the S.A.M., as the new computer center director was into magic. He had some good parties. I didn't have the patience or interest to continue, however.
