On the 15th, hiked up Cowles with Laura. It was a nice 4.5 mile hike, and the signs of spring were already appearing. We saw a hummingbird, got a shadow shot, and a dead shot.

On the 5th, 6th, played in mixed doubles tournament in Borrego. Came in 2nd with partner Fred Dow. Also won the $50 drawing for first time (actually the 3rd draw!).

Nov 1998

On the 1st, hiked Peak 2020 in backyard. A 4.5 hour hike.

On the 27th, 28th, camped with Karyn at Sycamore Canyon near Ventura, with her folks, and a group of about 20 other people. Played games, feasted, and saw a talent show, and mystery play. Drank too much wine. Went on some nice hikes up canyons, in mountains, and along beach in moonlight. Saw a double rainbow with Karyn on last 6 mile hike.

Piñata under attack!

On the 15th, hiked Peak 564 in Borrego Sink area, a 10 mile, 3 hour hike. Walked across the sink, thru mesquite forest, by a cool campsite in some tall tamarisks, by an abandoned homestead, and up Peak 564, which is just a large sandune supported by mesquite, starting and finishing at home. This hill overlooks the dump.

On the 22nd, hiked up Hellhole Canyon beyond first fork, in search of 30' waterfall. Failed. Nice fall colours. Difficult hike. 5 hours.

Flying saucer clouds were seen all day Saturday!

On the 7th and 8th, participated in Borrego mixed doubles tournament, with partner Barbara Rathbun, we failed to make it. Got a free breakfast at La Casa from Hank and Linda.

On the 24th, Jef, the klutz, took spill while hiking Cowles. Trail rash.

On the weekend of the 2nd went to the Cannon party. This is the halfway point between Monterrey and San Diego, so I transferred some furniture to Karyn there. I arrived there at 11:18 pm Thursday Oct. 2. Karyn arrived from the opposite direction at 11:23pm Oct. 2. We were the only ones there until 2pm Oct. 3. About 20 people, and 2 cannons showed up. Target was hit thrice by Mr.Heyob!

This is the year Heyob punched a hole in the target

We had moderately nice weather, a couple of nice fires, and some pretty good furniture to sit on!

Sep 1998

Hiked up to Laura Peak on the 6th.

Aug 1998

At the end of the month, went up to see dad & Leny. Did small amount of work in creating trail to find corner post for new lot. Dad bought lot next door which contains ruins of former Southern California Sierra Club meeting place (not used in 50 years). Part of old trail leading to amphitheatre was used in this project.

Karyn

Around this time backpacked on PCT N of LA with Karyn

The stairway to right bypassed the old switchback, which has eroded away. I and my sisters used to play on these trails when we were kids. The hillside is very steep, and landslides have caused several breaks in the old trail. Then went over to help Karyn prepare for her move to Monterey.

MT. WHITNEY TRIP

After driving up to Lone Pine with Laura on the 8th, connected with a group of about a dozen hikers. A couple of them offered to let us camp on their motel room floor, which we did.

On the 9th, at about 3a.m., we got up after only a few hours sleep, drove to Whitney Portal. We started hiking at 4:37am. We started hiking in the light of the moon with some bright planets in the morning sky. We all arrived at High Mountain Camp 4 hours later, but separated into groups going up the switchbacks. We saw a few of our group at the top 8 hours into the hike, and passed a few, including Mari, on the way down. Laura made it all the way, and did very well, completing the hike in under 15 hours. We both walked like 90-year olds as we walked into a pizza place after arriving back in Lone Pine. Laura wanted to get back to San Diego that night, but Jef was tired, and so Laura took over driving around Kramer Junction. We arrived in San Diego at 1:30am the next day.

About an hour into the hike, after we had some daylight. Laura is leftmost -- about 5 others in our group are also visible in this photo

On the 5th, Karyn and I did a 3 mile hike in San Clemente Canyon, and then proceeded to do 6 miles in La Jolla, including hitting Sunny Jim's Cave, and seeing a perfect sunset at Children's Beach. Didn't bother with any pix, but should have!

On the 11th, did my annual pilgrimage to OTL. Went with Sid, and spent a couple hours there. Got a T-shirt.

On the 19th and 20th, Karyn's mom came down, and we took her snorkling at La Jolla Cove, since she helped us pack up.

On the 24th, Karyn and I completed our move out of Tierrasanta, as Karyn prepared for her month-long trip to France and Spain, and her move to Monterrey for her school work (getting an MBA).

Fullerton

On the 27th, Mari, Karyn and I did the damned dam to dam hike starting at Lake Murray, going as close to the dam there as possible 0.8mi, and making an about face, proceding north to Cowles Peak 4.5 mi, continuing to Piles Peak 6 mi, descending to western side of Kwaaypaay 7.2 mi. We bushwhacked up Kwaaypaay, and descended to Mission Dam 11.5 mi. We then hiked to Mari's house 15.3 mi, as we were hot and tired (it was about 100°). Hike was 7 hours, about 15 miles, and over 3000' vertical up and down - a worthy hike. Karyn took me out to Khyber Pass that night, and we had a great dinner (sitting on cushions on the floor).

Jun 1998

On the 6th, saw Bullworth with Karyn. Went to Laura's art opening downtown. Great food and art at a pretty artsy building.

On the 7th, Karyn and I helped Kim at [former website "http://www.fastwave.net/fastwave/aboutus.html#friendly"] street fair in Rancho Bernardo, hawking FastWave Internet Service.

On the 22nd, Mari, Karyn and I went on a 12-mile hike that included Kwaaypay Peak, Fortuna Pass, Mission Dam, and the Mission Trails visitor center. The 4 hour hike completed at dusk, and was pretty nice. There were still lots of flowers out, including fields of Canchilagua on Kwaaypay. On the 13th, Karyn took me to Tecate. We had a beer at the brewry, had ice cream bars, drove around the town, and walked thru the business section. Got some groceries at the local Gigante, then went to Borrego. We stopped and toured the PCT southern terminus, stopped at a few places in the Lagunas: still lots of flowers, and stopped and toured Julian. Spent next day doing spring cleaning. Another great weekend.

On the 27th, Helen and Harriet came out. Helen, Karyn and I went on a hike at the Slot, of about 4 miles. They arm-twisted me into learning bridge. We slept under the stars this night, and it was great!

Karyn and Helen at Borrego Mtn.

On the 28th Helen, Karyn, and I took a little hike from visitor center to Palm Canyon, a half mile beyond main grove, a total of about 7 miles. Although it was about 105F when we finished, it eventually got up to 116F that day...a scorcher! Harriet took Helen back to Fullerton, and I worked on the water system, that was catastrophically failing in multiple areas.

On the 1st, drove to Cannon party: road is in better shape, but car was so loaded, bottomed out a couple dozen times before reaching homestead. 21 cars eventually showed up over next 24 hours. We set up camp, and sat around campfires. Greg played bongos and his friend Jacob played guitar. Then HH played a little. Several cannon shots at dusk (pictures being developed now). Really nice night not windy at all (unlike following night, which wasn't terribly windy).

On the 2nd, at the Cannon party: many cannon rounds (close misses) and bowling balls shot (both Heyob and Cassidy). Took videos, went on short hike with Karyn up-canyon. Sand Blazing Stars were stupendous. Flowers out at target were going strong (looked to be something in the sunflower family, similar to brittlebush, but probably more closely related to goldeneye). Played a little poker. We had a good breakfast, Craig made burgers for lunch. Dinner: Val cooked spaghetti, Karyn grilled veggies, Greg grilled ribs. Lots of rockets and other interesting stuff.

On the 3rd, returned from Cannon Party by way of MISSING PAGE - TO BE RECOVERED: Red Rock State Park. This is a pretty impressive area. Definitely worth seeing, and I don't believe I've never taken the time to see it before. Left Cannon Party after a big breakfast of pancakes, omelet, cooked on Mark's grill. Several bowling ball rounds shot by Heyob, and 1.75" rounds shot by Paco and Team Jones.

Karyn & I at Red Rock

On the 11th, Karyn and I hiked South Fortuna, and looked almost straight down 800' into Mission Gorge and the San Diego River. Wildflowers are still going full blast. Nice hike despite threatening storm.

On the 18th, Karyn, Mari and I hiked Corte Madera, the Woodpile. On the way (we started at wrong place), we hiked another peak (Pinos?). Wound up being over 10 miles, 5 hours. Pretty scenic! Really nice hike.

On the 23rd, 24th, played in tennis get-together at Parkway with Borrego Tennis group. Karyn and I played pretty well together. Went to feasts at Azar's and Edward's houses, and had a great time. Got to play Stage II with Karyn's folks, and was on winning team each of 2 times!

On the 31st, Soloed Villager. Met Steve, Jim and Chris, who were also crazy enough to hike in the desert in the summer. Got broiled, as I didn't have sunscreen. Spent an hour at top perusing register, which is nearly full, after 8 years. Had planned to do Mile-high Peak as well, but realized that was too much for this day.

On the 2nd, Karyn and I hiked down to the San Diego River from Tierrasanta. There is a really big waterfall in Mission Gorge (lots of water this season). Lots of flowers: mustard 9' tall, margarites, black sage, etc. Really cool hike!

On the 3rd, got revenge on Craig and Bryan at tennis: 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, with partner Sid, who was doing pretty good.

On the 4th, went to Rattlesnake Canyon, 5 mile hike, took a few pix.

On the 5th, took it easy. McD came by for a few minutes.

On the 9th, Karyn and I did a little hike in back hills of Tierrasanta, and wound up climbing Mt. Fortuna.

Tierrasanta

On the 12th, after a moderately relaxing weekend, Karyn and I took off for the south part of the park, and wound up hiking most of the trails in the Mountain Palm Springs area. This is a great area, and the flowers were still terrific.

On the 18th, went to Borrego and did the tennis tournament. Both Karyn and I wound up winning the upper division in straight doubles. My partner was Ken Shallahamer, and Karyn's was Mary Quimby.

Karyn and Dr. John

On the 24th, went up to visit dad and Leny in L.A. for a day.

On the 25th, at dad's place, had a blast walking thru the old neighborhood. It was very verdant, with lots of wild and domestic flowers. Pretty interesting place still.

Then went up to Karyn's friend, Helen, in West Hills, and attended a fancy birthday party, partaking in excellent food and drink, and played games and talked with some pretty interesting characters til the wee hours of the morning.

Jef in vacant lot near dad's house

On the 26th, left Helen's birthday party and drove to Fullerton, did laundry and visited Karyn's folks for a few hours, before returning to San Diego.

On the 8th and 9th, took Karyn up Cowles, taking 1 roll of film of flowers there on the 7th. Saw the Alaska film at Reuben H Fleet. Then went on 2 hikes. A quick one to Palm Wash on the 7th, and a medium one to Lookout Rock on the 8th. Took 5 rolls of pix.

On the weekend of the 14th, March tennis tournament was rain-shortened. Hank came down. Also Karyn and I entertained Eric and his girlfriend on Sunday.

On the 21st, 22nd, Julie, Thor and Logan came to Borrego. Trips included a hike to Ant Hill with Julie and a trip to MISSING FOLLOWING PAGE - TO BE RECOVERED: Coronado with Julie, Mom, Thor and Logan.

Also MISSING PAGE - TO BE RECOVERED: Laura visited for a couple hours on Sunday.

On the 28th and 29th, as cactus flowers started coming out, snow covered the surrounding mountains. I went out and took a few pix.

Feb 1998

On the 1st, took Karyn up Glorietta, and took some pictures to add to my MISSING PICS IN FOLLOWING PAGE - TO BE RECOVERED: Borrego Flower Album.

On the 3rd, hiked Cowles from north with Karyn, took 83 minutes, round-trip, even when we had to rush down after rain started near top. Saw Terry and Lou near top. Karyn called from my cel phone and arranged her first temporary job, and she walked in to it within an hour after the end of the hike.

On the 7th and 8th, helped mom start re-upholstering job of this loveseat. We finished on the 16th. Mom did most of the work. Here I am testing the finished work.

On the 15th, took Karyn and others, out to see some wildflower areas. We took a 3+ mile loop on MISSING PICS IN FOLLOWING PAGE - TO BE RECOVERED: Borrego Mountain, West Butte where we shot 3 rolls of film.

Jan 1998

On the 1st, missed the fireworks at La Casa (half a mile away) just after midnite, as I and Karyn slept thru it, but mom was waken up, and did see the last 5 minutes of them. Went to San Diego, and walked along the beach near Belmont Park. Showed Karyn downtown San Diego, and dropped her off at the train station the next morning.

On the 5th, except for minor details, finished painting outside of my shed.

On the 6th, got up early and did Cowles, seeing sun rise from the summit. Beautiful clear weather the past few days allowed seeing the ocean clearly. Views were outstanding.

On the 11th, Karyn misses deadline for MBA program in Monterrey, so decides to come down to SDSU for this term.

On the 16th, mom turned 70!

On the 18th, hiked Yaqui from home for 3rd time. Very verdant with fillery and rock daisies. Saw a bighorn near summit. 6 hours, 3 to top. the Scotman was the only entry in the register that I added last hike (in May '97).

On the 19th, went apartment looking with Karyn. Picked out one in Tierrasanta.

On the 20th, moved into new apartment.
