On the 2nd, worked some at Norm's, but back was bothering me, so took it easy the rest of the day. Slide conversion came back this day, so more pictures from 70s and 80s will soon appear on my journal.

On the 3rd won 7 at poker and obtained materials to finish 2nd PVC irrigation line next door.

On the 4th and 5th reached a stopping point at Rich's, completing the new dual valve system. Started working on Kathy's shelf supports.

On the 6th and 7th, built a valve cover for Kathy.

Installed valve cover

On the 8th, with Jaroslav, installed shelf supports at Kathy's.

On the 10th, lost 6 at poker. Over the weekend, spent a lot of time updating this journal with slide pictures recently converted to JPEGS. Completing 1973.

On the 13th thru the end of the week, spackled and painted Herrlin's deck.

On the 17th, lost 3-6, 2-6, 2-6 at tennis with partner Craig. Lost 12 at poker.

On the 18th thru the 21st, worked at replacing top of my bathroom vanity with new sink and new countertop. On the 21st noted a bubble pushing up 4 tiles at base of vanity about half and inch, so wound up replacing 6 tiles.

Tiles and vanity

On the 23rd, worked on reinforcing Craig and Nancy's fence and installing a lattice on top. Spent the night with mom in Clairmont. Saw some of the Seaworld fireworks that night.

Craig's fixed up fence

On the 24th, continued working on the fence, completing that task. After seeing Mr. and Mrs. Smith which was fairly good, lost at tennis, 4-6, 5-7, again with Craig against Hank and Fred. Then lost 26 at poker.

On the 25th thru the 27th, squoze about 100 lemons given to me by Craig (he cut a big lemon branch to allow room for the lattice sections).

During the week of the 20th, dad had the following experience: he was in the back yard, when a panicing coyote puppy ran by him (the slope was about 100%), followed by 2 big dogs (a husky and a doberman).

The 2 dogs cornered the puppy, who was fighting back, but yelping in panic, as the 2 dogs looked like they were going to kill him. Just then, 4 coyotes came running down past my dad and tore into those 2 dogs, extracting bloody chunks from them. When the 2 dogs determined they were in trouble, they ran off, but the coyotes double-teamed each one - one in front and one behind. When the dogs turned on the one behind, the one in front attacked. The action moved up and down the hill as the dogs tried desperately to escape and went on for 10 minutes somewhere off in the brush. Don't know if the coyotes gave up or finished up those 2 dogs (each of which was 50 to 100% larger than a coyote).

On the last week of the month, worked on converting and editting 8mm film after it was converted to a few DVDs.

On the 30th, helped mom pick up Rudy and drive him back to his mom's home, where my mom was house sitting. We had dinner and I later met his wife, Margie, who is an R.N. for Sharp's critical care. Rudy works for the state and is in I.T. Camped out here in Clairmont for night.

On the 1st, dad arrived with Leny and her relatives, Marleen and Hein from Holland. Went out to dinner at Kendalls with them before they retired for the night at Palm Canyon Resort.

On the 2nd, went with the group to the Slot, Split Mountain, and the visitor center, before they left for Palm Springs and the aerial tram.

On the 5th, shipped out the remaining 8mm film to get converted, as well as 500 slides. Then got around to varnishing door at Norm's, after working on it for months, but found it still needs a lot of work.

On the 6th, met Liz S at Red Robin in UTC. I had fish tacos, which weren't that good. Should have had a burger, which that place specializes in, as Liz did. Then saw Hitchhikers Guide which was pretty good. Lost 15 at poker.

By the 8th, I was 18,878 days old, and after having coffee at Peggy's, updated website for:

On the 11th, fixed Kathy Bullock's irrigation system, including a break, several broken risers, and defective wire from the controller to the valves. Turns out the conduit was full of water, and the wire was not working. Then just after I got home, my neighbor wanted to replace his controller, and so I started that project.

On the 12th, continued working at neighbor's (Rich Zundel), making and installing a controller box. Saw Dr. about tennis elbow, and she recommended I see Kathy Bullock (or another physical therapist).

On the 13th, finished Norm's door, worked more on cleaning up his pool.

On the 14th, completed Rich's irrigation system, generating a map:

On the 15th, temperatures in Borrego finally surpassed 100 for the first time this year. A very late start of summer. It hit 101°F. scanned in and started back-filling this Journal with a source of documents, including yearbooks and report cards, back to 1960.

During the week, did some work at Norm's, but spent most of the time upgrading my (this) website.

On the 20th, drove thru Cuyamaca to see the incredible display of flora. Saw Kingdom of Heaven, which was pretty good. Won at tennis: 6-1, 7-5. Lost 12 at poker.

On the 21st, continued re-working website as temperatures outside soared to about 108°F.

On the 22nd, went to TP party.

During the week of the 23rd, continued working next door on Rich's irrigation system. Also did some maintenance and restoration of an old Mexican Indian plow, for Norm.

On the 27th, saw Star Wars, which was pretty good. Couldn't find poker game, so drove back to Borrego early.

Worked on several projects thru end of month, installing a valve at Kathy B.'s, and 3 at Rich's.

On the 31st, cut off beard for first time in about 13 years.

On the 1st, got Elsa to give us a little concert with dad's guitar (1.7 Mb Video) -- (3.4 Mb wmv MOVIE). Then picked up mom, with Elsa, and killed time before the ceremony. Among other things, got my oil changed at Jiffy Lube, and bought some hats. Attended services, which included a military component (7.8 Mb wmv MOVIE) with a 3 gun salute to Van, who served in the Navy as a radar technician in WWII. Then visited the reception for a little bit, before dad came by and picked up mom and Elsa. At this point, my only remaining aunt or uncle is aunt Sue. Then I drove back to S.D., where I found out that Jiffy Lube had somehow blown my tail-light and instrument light fuse. Moved a less critical fuse in it's place, then won 25 at poker.

On the 2nd, took it easy, skipping the Liar's contest at Peg Leg again.

On the 3rd, played a set and a half of tennis. Orthodic inserts came in mail, so I then hiked 3 miles with them.

On the 4th, started tearing out the tiles in the Herrlin master shower. Determined I probably have a cold.

Shower before demolition

On the 5th, continued tearing out tiles, fixed some things at Norm's. Cold got worse.

On the 7th, completed removing tile/drywall of Herrlin shower.

On the 8th, saw Upside of Anger. Okay, but a chick flick. Then lost at tennis with partner Hank: 5-7, 3-6, 6-5 (shortened set). Then won 6 at poker.

On the 9th, managed to do a fair amount of clean-up/organizing, as Steve and Dianne said they may stop by later, but didn't.

On the 10th, played three sets at Jaroslavs, split with partner Don Irwin, then lost set against Jaroslav. Twice a swarm of bees stopped at my hot tub. Fixed one possible hole.

Spots in this photo are bees!

From the 11th thru the 13th, removed floor, bench, remaining tiling of Herrlin's shower, in preparation for Steve to re-do it. Tennis elbow was not pleased.

On the 15th, took 17 people from tennis club on tour of Norm's grounds. Later that night, did the draw for the tournament.

Tennis group at Norm's

On the 16th and 17th, participated in tournament with partner Hank. We lost 2-8, 9-7, 6-8, but lasted long enough to play on Sunday. Had some good Italian at banquet on Saturday, with leftovers on Sunday.

Also on the 16th, Chuck, a geocacher found my linked cache #5, and reclaimed the $100 prize - which had been stained blue due to a leaky gasket. Dianne was there to witness the event. The cache was in place for 3 years before being found!

On the 22nd, drove up to cannon party. Nasty traffic between highway 60 and 215, tho. Gas was over $2.50/gallon for first time. Had boysenberry malt with my Double Ortega Astro Cheeseburger. Got to see Tom H's new beercan mortar.

Cannon shooting

On the 23rd, continuing partying, going on sidetrip to possible Homestead 3. HH brought his troupe over and we had some good guitar playing with him and Paco that night. Tom C. shot off a few bowling balls. Both Paco and McD knocked down the target, despite Mark S's new reinforcement.

Possible Homestead 3

On the 24th, left early after a great cannon party, in order to make sure Steve F's party survived his gnarly hike the previous day, and because my shin splits were hurting pretty badly.

On the 25th, did a little bit of work, mostly detailing Gil's Taurus SHO.

From the 26th to the 28th, mostly took it easy to help heal my shin splits. Editted a few movies for the last cannon party page.

On the 29th, got my teeth cleaned, saw movie The Interpreter which was okay. Then lost 12 at poker. My fuse burned out twice for my tail light in Escondido, but decided to go for it, and drive 75 miles home without any dash or tail lights, and made it.

On the 30th, fixed problem with fuses burning out on my car: a damaged cable for a trailer light adapter. Then detailed Gil's truck. My right shin continued to have severe problems, and still hasn't healed from the April 17th injury.
