Arches National Park with Kathy and Jef September 18 and 19, 2005
Jef and Kathy drove about 4 hours from the moosehunt camp in Strawberry Reservoir Recreation Area, central Utah, to southeastern Utah, where they bought a National Parks pass and visited Arches National Park. Their first stop was a 4.3 mile hike to Delicate Arch late in the afternoon:

Wolfe, a crippled Civil War veteran built a small house (to far left) in the 1880s. The larger, but still smaller house to right was built after 1910.

This is the interior of the new improved Wolfe Ranch house.

These pictographs are not far from the Wolfe Ranch houses

Mounted riders imply an age of no more than a few hundred years

Kathy was interested in the local fauna

The trail afforded many fine views - Salt Canyon is below and the 13,000' high La Sal Mountains are in the far background.

Although most of the trail was over sandstone, there were some sandy areas

After a great hike to Delicate Arch, we drove around, took a few pix...

Two of the 4 major hikes (2 or more miles) in the park were recorded. Delicate Arch was 4.3 miles, 500' vertical, and Landscape Arch was 1.8 miles, 100' vertical.

We saw these rock climbers near the Windows. To the right is some random feature in the park.

After taking a few pix before sunset at our private viewpoint in Arches, which overlooked the La Sals and Fiery Furnace, we cracked open a bottle of wine (Jef broke corkscrew, and had to improvise another - utilizing a screw, screwdriver, and pliers) and enjoyed a great sunset....

After leaving the park, we found Moab pretty full. About the 6th hotel we checked was the Redrock Lodge, 1 block off the main drag. All other hotels were full. Redrock Lodge was a fairly nice place, and only about $60/nite. We sat in their jacuzzi while awaiting the Ysabella pizza we ordered, which was great.
