On the 1st, after being towed home at 4a.m. due to 2 flat tires, slept late.

My 2 flat tires

On the 2nd, continued working on trip pictures.

On the 3rd, removed over 1000 drowned bees from Norm's pool before going on 10 mile hike on PCT with Kathy.

1 mile off road on PCT we saw this cool manzanita

On the 4th, watered at Chidesters and started trench for new irrigation system. Spackled at Herrlin's. Thunderstorm rained at Kathy's, but not Jef's house. Later that night, Gypsy found 2' long rattlesnake in back yard. I killed it and threw it over the fence. After Kathy finished cooking 3 steaks to perfection, Holley wanted the tail. Went out and cut it off. When we returned, Marley had eaten the steaks.

On the 5th, worked on Turpin computer problem. Painted about half the Herrlin staircase.

On the 6th, went to Brawley to renew my licence. While there, got some building materials at Lowes in El Centro.

Holley presenting Jef with presents

On the 7th, drove to SD with Kathy and got my teeth cleaned. Then Kathy and Stacey took me out to the 94th Aero Squadron for my birthday lunch. We did some shopping and got the car cleaned before tennis. Kathy played with Stacey, and Jef and Craig split sets (5-7, 7-5) against Hank and Gerry. Lost 13 at poker.

Hank's new grille

On the 8th, mostly recovered from prior day, but Jef trimmed some mesquite and Kathy saw a few patients.

On the 10th, checked out Norm's pool -- was only down 3" after 5 hot days without water.

On the 11th, started installing new irrigation system at Chidesters.

On the 12th, drove Kathy to her doctor in SD. We had lunch at Casa Machado (airport) - Jef thought it was excellent, but Kathy didn't. Also did some shopping.

On the 13th, worked at Norm's, waiting for a spa to be delivered. Wound up trimming and sweeping all the way from bottom of driveway to all around the house.

On the 14th, drove to SD, did some quick shopping, before winning at tennis (partner Craig) against Hank and Gerry: 6-1, 6-3, 5-6. Won 1 at poker.

On the 15th, finished painting most of rest of Herrlin staircase, while Angel Fire was sending smoke into the valley. Later that night, as they looked at a thunderstorm to the south, Kathy took Jef out to new Italian restaurant at Borrego airport. Dinner was excellent, and we found out from the waitress, Deb, that Carlee was celebrating her 10th anniversary in business. We dropped by and had a drink at Carlees and congratulated her. Kathy helped a good-sized group of women sing a couple of kareoke songs with Carlee -- Harper Valley PTA and Delta Dawn.

One of Carlee's gifts was this gumball machine

On the 16th, we took a gift and card over to Carlee at her home, and then Kathy bought Jef a belt and pants for college reunion for the following weekend. Jef made salsa verde that afternoon.

On the 17th, consumed 1 gallon of spackle in preparation for painting Kathy's house -- only around the garage door, however.

On the 18th, completed final assembly of Norm's new spa.

Completed spa

On the 19th, did periodic maintenance at Betty's house in Tubb Canyon. Started trenching to irrigate manzanita -- to be installed next time.

On the 20th, did a bunch of yardwork at my house while waiting for Stanley Steamer to come and clean carpets. They did a great job, and the carpets are now in good shape. Went to Middle School for open house to meet Holley's teachers. Holley is doing well this year. We followed with dinner at Carlee's.

On the 21st, travelled with Kathy and Holley to Long Beach, where we checked into a suite on the Queen Mary. We attended the 40th anniversary party for Cal State University of Long Beach's Physical Therapy Department. Only 3 in her class of 12 were there, and she only managed to meet one of them near the end of the party. After dinner, the 3 of us hit the dance floor.

After party, it was raining outside

On the 22nd, we were awaken with a shrill fire alarm going off. After investigating, it was no big deal, but Kathy was annoyed. After Kathy and Holley went on the "Ghost Tour", we checked out of the hotel and purchased matching clothes before leaving the ship. We had lunch at Parker Lighthouse (an excellent one!). We stopped in Oceanside on way home and did some shopping, including ordering a load of rocks and Kathy's birthday present (a new bar-b-que grille) to be delivered on the following monday.

On the 23rd, started shuttling a few things with mom's truck between my house, Kathy's house, and Norm's house. Went on 5 mile hike to Dry Canyon with Kathy, who had too much trouble with boulders due to sore ankle and back -- Jef tried out Kathy's birthday present to him, a new GPS unit, for 1st time.

On the 25th, continued learning office tasks at Kathy's work.

On the 26th, continued working at Kathy's office. Kathy's present, a Bar-b-q came in this day, so I assembled it.

Perfect Flame in place in Kathy's back yard

On the 27th, continued training with Marlene.

On the 28th, got Kathy's car serviced at Chuck's Auto. Had meeting with Kathy, Marlene before driving to SD for shopping. While there, won tennis with partner Hank: 6-4, 6-4, 2-4 against Gerry and Sid. Won 0.15 at poker.

On the 29th, did some yardwork at Kathy's house.

On the 30th, started installing irrigation at Chidesters -- doing about 100' of trenching and 80' of piping. Also stopped by and serviced Herrlin house. Kathy, Holley and I had a nice dinner at Carmelita's. My toe started hurting this afternoon.

Aug 2007

On the 1st, worked most of the day cleaning up, throwing away stuff, moving stuff, burning stuff, at my house. Also installed elec. receptacle at neighbor, Zundel's.

On the 2nd, completed electrical work at Zundel's, watered at Chidesters, and did some work at Norm's.

On the 3rd, went to SD with Kathy (in her new car) and Holley. Bought a new tent at REI, and had lunch with Stacey at Shogun. Went shopping with Kathy, before she dropped me off at Sid's. Sid drove me to poker, where I won 8. Sid drove me back to Poway Road where we met Kathy. Jef drove Kathy's car for 1st time back to Borrego.

On the 4th, went thru my house and prepared bedrooms for final cleaning, as well as upper bathroom. Also completed cleaning over half the garage and much of the kitchen. Added mosre stuff to the dumpster. Found mom's cache of artificial foliage. Some was in perfect condition 32 years after manufacture.

On the 5th, started work with a flat tire. Repaired broken screen in Tubb Canyon. Filled up dumpster adequately at my house. Joined Kathy and Holley to host Virginia, Elaine (Diner), and the Gage's for an Enchilada and Ratatouille dinner.

On the 6th, drove Kathy and Holley to San Diego, where Kathy had doctor's appointment. Lunch at Carmen's. Drove to L.A., stopping by Kathy's old stomping grounds in Norwalk. Had dinner at dad's.

Kathy's old home

After visiting Kathy's doctor in San Diego the prior day, we drove to L.A. to visit Jef's dad. After waking up the next day, Kathy noted the guest bed as a "torture device". After touring dad's latest improvements, we drove Holley to the Burbank Airport, and off she flew to NY to spend a week with Cousin John. After shopping for supplies, they brought home Leny some flowers, before taking her and dad out to dinner at the Red Lion Tavern.

On the 8th, Kathy and Jef started their 3 week vacation, camping that night in Lone Pine.

VACATION DAY 1

On the 9th, left some of mom's ashes at this nice campsite. Then, after breaking camp, we hiked 5 miles at an elevation of over 10,000' in Horseshoe Meadows. There, Kathy spotted an animal, which we could not decide what it was: either a black bear or a cow. Then drove to Big Pine, and stayed at the Big Pine Motel, cooking dinner there.

VACATION DAY 2

On the 10th, after checking out of motel, hiked up beyond Lon Cheney's cabin on Big Pine North Fork, but Kathy had knee problems, so turned back at that time. Still did 5+ miles and 2000' elevation gain.

VACATION DAY 3

On the 11th, checked out around our campsite by McGee Creek. Left some of mom's ashes here -- I think I told her about this campground, and she took advantage of it once. Then drove to Convict Lake and hiked to far end of lake, traversing about 2 miles. Then re-supplied in Mammoth Lakes and then checked out Hot Creek. We could not bathe there, as it was closed due to recent geysering.

VACATION DAY 4

On the 12th, broke camp at McGee Creek, stopped at visitor center in Mammoth, getting a local map and T-shirts. Drove out to edge of Devil's Postpile and hiked about 3 miles from the Minaret Viewpoint. Drove to June Lake and decided to stay at the Big Rock Resort, getting a room with a view of the lake. Room had marginal plumbing and a torturous bed (according to Kathy), but was otherwise fine. Cooked dinner outside the room and checked out the sauna and jacuzzi. We walked to town that night and saw a deer there.

VACATION DAY 5

On the 13th, did laundry W of June Lake, then packed up and left to nearby trailhead to Fern Lake. Hiked up to lake -- Kathy threatened to abort the hike when it got pretty steep with some steep exposure. Total hike was about 5 miles and 1600' vertical. When we arrived at lake, a group was just leaving. We sat on the beach and had cheese and crackers. Another small group arrived just as we left, so we had the whole place to ourselves while there. Then we drove south, gassing up in Bishop, and continuing to Lone Pine, where we camped at Diaz Lake.

VACATION DAY 6

On the 14th, we woke up to a mess at the picnic table: this being the first campsite where bears were not a problem, we had left our food bags on the picnic table; squirrels had rifled thru them and knocked them down on the ground; when we first looked on the scene, birds were pecking thru the debris. After packing up, we had brunch at the Bonanza Mexican Restaurant in Lone Pine. Then we headed for Las Vegas. We purchased a season ticket to all fee-collecting National Parks, Forests, etc. in Death Valley. We had a mediocre lunch in Stovepipe Wells. Then we drove straight to Las Vegas, and checked into the Luxor -- spending about an hour checking in! We stayed on the 24th floor, overlooking the airport. We then took a taxi to the airport, and waited for Holley to arrive. We took a taxi back to the hotel and later went on a walk. We traversed Mandalay Bay and the Excaliber before Kathy put Jef and Holley on the NY-NY roller coaster. We then walked back to the hotel and retired for the night.

VACATION DAY 7

On the 15th, after Holley and Kathy used the Luxor pool, we checked out and had lunch at the buffet. Holley, it turns out, left her purse at the restaurant. She had $217 in it! She remembered it after we had gone 70 miles to Pahrump, and were doing some re-supplying. Fortuneately, Jef suggested calling the hotel. Kathy called and the purse was found. She later arranged for the hotel to mail the purse back, and it did arrive safely in Borrego. 2 weeks later, after arriving home, Holley found the cash removed, but a check for $217 included!

We stopped in Death Valley and took a few pictures. We arrived in Lone Pine and set up camp at Tuttle Creek before dark. We noted the smoke obscuring the sierras -- caused by the fire near Santa Barbara. We had a campfire and hot dogs for dinner.

VACATION DAY 8

On the 16th, after breaking camp at Tuttle Creek, drove to Bishop and had brunch at the Village Cafe in Bishop. Picked up a California map at the nearby casino while getting gas. Then drove straight to June Lake, where we set up camp at the Oh! Ridge campground. Our Mexican neighbors arrived later and played some loud music into the night. We had a campfire, and Holley connected with the neighbor kids, whose parents gave her some toys to play with, as well. Roasted some marshmallows.

VACATION DAY 9

On the 17th, Kathy bought some fishing gear and rented a motor boat. Although Holley was the fisherman, Kathy wound up doing some of her fishing. Although we only planned to spend a couple hours on the lake, we wound up staying 3.5 hours, and Jef got burned without a hat and no suntan lotion. Another campfire that night, and the Mexican neighbors were fairly quiet. Holley had a good time playing with her new friends.

VACATION DAY 10

On the 18th, we showered in June Lake before breaking camp. We drove to Lee Vining where we had a nice lunch at Nicely's. Then drove into Yosemite, walking about a mile around Olmstead Point. Then we set up camp at White Wolf ($14). After cooking dinner and roasting a few marshmallows, Holley retired, and Jef put the food in the food locker. As Jef and Kathy sat around the campfire for a few more minutes, they heard noises coming from the food locker. A 300 pound bear was trying to break in! Jef took a picture, but was too far away. Jef then took another photo, a bit closer, and the bear ran away. Jef then looked at the food locker and found it was half-open -- he had not properly secured it. After Jef succeeded in securing it, they retired to the tent. Throughout the night, noises could be heard throughout the campground as other campers tried to scare away the bear(s). Our neighbors were among those -- they finally scared it away after about 10 minutes.

VACATION DAY 11

On the 19th, we broke camp at White Wolf in Yosemite and then stopped at the Tuolomne Grove of giant redwoods. We hiked about 2 miles, 400' elevation gain/loss to see some of these giants, including the tunnel tree. Then we drove down into the valley, visited the visitor center for a while, and had a beer while watching rock climbers at El Capitan. We drove towards San Francisco, stopping at Groveland for an excellent lunch at Cocina Michoacana, and getting photos of the oldest continuing business in CA: the Iron Door Saloon. We then continued driving, stopping at a Quality Inn in Manteca, where we did laundry, and visited the jacuzzi that night.

VACATION DAY 12

On the 20th, we packed up and left the motel in Manteca and headed to San Francisco. We crossed the Bay Bridge and found our way to Fisherman's Wharf, where we had a fair lunch at the Franciscan -- good sourdough bread, tho. We then stopped by and visited cousin Patti for about half an hour -- Kathy spent half that time finding a parking place! Then we were off to wine country. After going over Golden Gate Bridge, we gassed up in Sausalito, and suffered thru some traffic before finding our way to the Napa Valley. Shunning all the wineries there, we made our way to Calistoga, and after finding Kathy's preferred resort had burned down, settled on an older resort: the Calistoga Village Inn & Spa, which is great! We arranged for 2 days, but had to get a suite (at 129/night) with a Roman bath to accomplish that. The resort had a warm pool, a regular pool, a large jacuzzi, and a sauna! We cooked dinner outside our room.

VACATION DAY 13

On the 21st, we had a nice lunch at Brannan's. We then visited the Old Faithful Geyser of Calistoga, which was nice. Then, after dropping Holley off at the hotel to play with some new-found friends, we finally started out wine tasting in the Alexander Valley. We visited and purchased wines at these wineries: Hanna, Johnson's Alexander Valley Wines, Alexander Valley, Stryker Sonoma, Murphy Goode - just bought by Kendall Jackson. We then returned to the hotel. We later sampled the jacuzzi and sauna, after cooking some dinner outside the hotel room.

VACATION DAY 14

On the 22nd, after checking out of hotel, got ice for ice chested, and then stopped at the Petrified Forest and viewed the huge petrified redwoods. Then continued wine tasting experience, stopping at the following wineries: Hop Kiln, Rabbit Ridge, Belvedere, Mill Creek, Everett Ridge, Quivera. We sought out a campsite around Sonoma Lake, but failed. So we headed back to Highway 101, but saw a camping sign before arriving in Cloverdale -- this was the Dutcher Creek RV Park. It was nice, and we got a great RV spot for $30/night. We set up camp and cooked dinner there.

VACATION DAY 15

On the 23rd, we left our camp and drove down the east side of the Russian River. We stopped at Korbel to do some wine tasting. Korbel had a spectacular flower garden out front which included a huge dahlia, which Holley broke when bending it down to smell it. The wine was good, so we purchased some wines and sparling wines. We stopped in Guerneville and had some good Mexican fare at the Taqueria la Tapatia before driving to the coast to walk around the beach where the Russian River enters the Pacific. We then drove up the coast, getting some gas, before heading back to Cloverdale. We re-supplied at the Safeway in Healdsburg before getting back to camp.

VACATION DAY 16

On the 24th, Kathy talked to the owner, and although our site was reserved for the night, she arranged to move us to another nice site nearby. Before moving, left some of mom's ashes at this nice campsite. We moved the tent without disassembling it, and moved it onto a deck on the new site. This day we headed north to Mendocino County. In Boonville, we gassed up the car and had a not-so-good lunch at what was the old brewery building, now called the Highpockety Ox. We then proceded to do some more wine tasting, visiting the following vinyards: Toulouse, Yorkville, Husch. Before returning, we visited a grove of giant redwoods at Hendy Woods State Park. On the way back, Holley finally saw some wild deer.

VACATION DAY 17

On the 25th, we eft Dutcher Creek RV Park, and headed south. Stopped by SF, and dropped off a bottle of wine with Patti. After battling the streets of SF, managed to continue south. We accidentally drove by Chinatown (at the end of Grant St.) on way out. Then we stopped in Los Gatos for dinner at a diner. Toured Santa Cruz while looking for a hotel. Finally settled on the Continental. Later that night, we visited the amusement park on the beach.

VACATION DAY 18

On the 26th, Kathy and Jef went on a walk to end of pier, getting some coffee there. After checking out of hotel, drove to pier and had lunch -- some excellent chowder! Holley spent a lot of time looking at the seals there. After lunch, headed down the coast on Hwy 1. No time to stop at San Simeon. Found Morro Strand State Beach had lots of space, so got a good campsite there. After seeing a great sunset Kathy cooked another nice dinner at our site.

VACATION DAY 19

On the 27th, broke camp on Morro Beach and drove to Oxnard, where Kathy showed us her old town -- much had changed, and she didn't recognize most of it! We ate at the Whale's Tail -- one of her favourite lunch spots. Lunch was good. Then we headed for McGrath State Beach. The campground there had changed and gotten further from the beach. We stayed at site #100.

VACATION DAY 20

On the 28th, we took a walk on the beach before leaving the campground. After our walk, we drove all the way back to Borrego, completing our great camping, wine-tasting, touring adventure, and getting Holley back in time for the 5th day of school.

VACATION DAY 21

On the 29th, restarted taking care of Norm's place.

Nice sunset this night

On the 30th, did periodic maintenance at Betty's and Herrlin's.

On the 31st, helped Kathy and her crew clean up my house. I cleaned out the carport. Drove to SD, did some shopping, played pickle ball and poker at Craig's. Won at pickle ball with partner Dave, 3-1, but lost 1 at poker. When driving home, got first flat halfway between Cuyamaca and Julian. Got 2nd flat just past Banner. After walking a couple miles in search of Cel coverage, used call box. Arranged for tow truck. Met cyclist going to Butterfield in middle of nowhere at 2 a.m. Kathy arrived just after tow truck driver, and rode with her while tow truck followed us.

On the 1st, mostly took it easy after a long Saturday, but did manage to pick most of remaining grapes, amounting to about 10 pounds. Holley started making cookies.

On the 2nd, replaced a non-functioning component of irrigation at Norm's with 3 dribblers.

Cactus flower in front of Kathy's house

On the 3rd, replaced a spider dribbler at Norm's with 4 dribblers.

On the 4th, got Holley some f/w to shoot off later that night. We had bbq T-bones, baked taters.

Holley with her arsenal

On the 5th, started irrigation project at Zundel's.

On the 6th, got shoulder treatment from Kathy. Then drove to San Diego. Split at tennis with partner Hank (7-6, 2-6) against Jerry and Sid. Lost 4 at poker.

On the 7th, Stacey came to visit. Did some irrigation work at Zundel's. Stacey, Holley, Kathy, and Jef had dinner at the Arches.

On the 8th, Jef started updating his mom's memorial (a project delayed for several months), and later put his old swamp cooler in the dumpster with the help of Rusty, and then did some more irrigation work at Zundel's next door. Stacey left later that afternoon for San Diego, and another quarter at school.

On the 9th, Jef completed updating his mom's timeline. He then used up rest of old roofing paint and started painting guest house roof.

On the 10th, after Kathy treated Jef for his shoulder, Jef completed painting guest house roof and then painted ducting in main house. Lath that night, Kathy dragged a half asleep Jef for a 3 mile walk, and combined with abuse legs had undergone recently, and not stretching, Jef pulled up lame, with shin splints, after a couple of miles.

On the 11th, Jef drove Kathy to doctor in SD. They did some shopping after treating Hank to lunch at Shogun.

On the 12th, added irrigation at Norm's to water some cacti formerly watered with a spider dribbler, after hooking up a sink at the Roadrunner Club.

Irrigation at Norm's

On the 13th, after Kathy gave him a treatment for his sore shoulder, Jef did some shopping in SD. Big winner, winning 30, at poker that night.

On the 14th, Jef used up rest of roofing paint on his roof, then finished job at Zundel's. Kathy and Holley cleaned white truck and car (both our mother's cars when they passed away) inside and out:

Kathy's Crown-vic

Jef's Nissan

On the 15th, detailed my car, and Holley and Kathy cleaned up white Jeep.

On the 16th, did some work at Norm's after doing some clean-up at my house.

On the 17th, re-caulked Dawn's shower, spackled and checked out Herrlin house, Cut bougainvilleas at Zundel's, and put some of debris into dumpster.

On the 18th, started watering again at Chidesters, filled dumpster with neighbor, Zundel's, bougainvillea and torn-out counter debris. Worked a little and watered at Betty's in Tubb Canyon. Disposed of 2nd caught rat at Norm's while doing some work there.

On the 19th, found dumpster empty, so continued cleaning up Zundel's. For first time in 20 years, completely cleared everything off of my living room carpet.

on the 20th, did some shopping in SD -- had incident where I found my wallet missing in checkout at TJs. Fortuneatly it had fallen out of my pocket and landed in crack betweem my car seat and door. Split at tennis with partner Craig, 5-7, 6-2, (2-3). Big winner at poker, winning 10. Lost wallet again at gas station, but found it after it had fallen out of my pocket, and slid behind driver seat.

On the 21st, drove to La Quinta with Kathy and Holley, and helped her in her search for a new car. After looking at Kias and Chryslers (especially the Sebring), she picked out a Nissan Maxima, and wound up driving it home. Had lunch at the "Thai Smile" in La Quinta.

Yes, it has a sunroof!

On the 22nd, spent most of the day cleaning out the garage with Kathy, as it had gotten quite cluttered.

On the 23rd, did some work at Zundel's, then watered at Chidesters and took Holley to rehearsal for play. Helped out a bit with that -- but Kathy kept interrupting with emergency phone calls. 1st call was 'where's a camera?' as a hawk had got stuck in Iggy's old cage. 2nd call was 'how do you use your dvd player?', as hers had just broke, and Kathy wanted to do her workout video.

Hawk stuck in cage

On the 24th, worked at Norm's, starting a re-do of irrigation to about a dozen plants. Nearly filled up dumpster from Zundel's re-model, and installed new faucet -- despite not having control over completely turning off water. Late in the afternoon, thundershowers hit in a few places in the valley. Not enough rain to wet the ground around our houses, but enough to mess up our windshields.

Sunbeam illuminating canyon

On the 25th, spackled at Herrlins and installed lattice panels in Zundel's carport.

Installed lattice panels

On the 26th, after installing major irrigation change at Norm's, helped Kathy disperse actors to stage with correct props for Holley's play. Kathy did Fred Jee's raggedy Ann makeup.

Fred after make-up completed

On the 27th, saw Transformers in SD. Good special effects and cute, but also fairly shallow -- what do you expect when it's based on a toy? Mostly lost at tennis, and forgot to stretch. Won 24 at poker. Got a new watch.

On the 28th, watered at Chidesters. Later that night, Kathy and Jef watched Holley and her fellow thespians perform in the summer kid's play on closing night. Attended cast party afterwards, Jef had 3 slices of some pretty good Carlee's pizza.

On the 29th, Holley pulled a squirrel away from predator, Gypsy. Then made a couple batches of salsa, fixed broken rocker/recliner chair in guest house, replaced Kathy's spa water, removed pieces of Kathy's largest pot, which had come apart, and cleaned up the mess. Kathy and Holley groomed Marley and Desi.

On the 30th, trimmed most of the deadwood in trees behind neighbor Zundel's house, and burned most of it in a burn barrel.

On the 31st, did some work at Norm's, completing an irrigation extension at the edge of his W hilltop. Started re-doing an electrical addition at Zundel's. My burn barrel fire was still going, so added some dead weeds to it. Kathy made some nice bar-b-q chicken this night. Also, a strawberry sundae, same as previous night.
