On the 1st, Kathy wanted to take Elizabeth over to the bay side (about a mile east of our house). Another dandelawn The bay is just beyond the end of Elizabeth Rd Wetlands Aberdeen, about 20 miles to the east In our neighborhood, there are 2 streets off Elizabeth. We live on Baker and this is Adams that Kathy & her doppelganger are turning on Deer as viewed from our front door Deer as viewed from in front of our front door On the 2nd, chore day. We did laundry & stayed home a lot. Looking in attic space - these are exhause vents No insulation yet Half the machines at this laundromat don't work On the 3rd, we walked to the beach, explored a side trail(getting lost, briefly), and along the beach - another 6+ mile walk. It rained early this morning Local slug We explored this side trail Mossy tree Trail forked a few time, shrinking each time Beach overlook deck This is the last day we visited a beach on this trip The sun came out this afternoon Pelicans The start of the beach trail that goes to our house Saw this deer near the condos at the beach Approaching the water tower near our house On the 4th, packed up and left our house, driving to Salem. The motel we stayed at last time didn't take pets this time, so we settled for Motel 6 across the street. A scuzzy area, but Kathy wanted to eat at the same Chinese place. Prior guests at motel had unplugged the TV, so we and the staff had a devil of a time reconnecting things. We put all the stuff we bought in this pile Covering our pile with a comforter and leaving 4 small bags of trash that Albert promised to toss for us Workers had come back just as we were packing up Gassed up at this Chehalis casino gas station On the 5th, we checked out and drove from Salem to CA near Tule Lake, where we stayed at the Ellis Motel. Smoke in the air, as seen from this red sunrise Smoke tinted the light yellow - here we are at a rest stop As we traversed the coastal range, we were near a fire, but once we got under the blue sky, we were out of the smoke Interesting sign in Crescent Lake junction At the Ellis Motel, which we paid extra for due to the fair going on nearby This vendor at the fair is from LA and his team provided the Thai & Chinese food there. He was fascinated by the big owls in the trees One of the owls |
The front of the motel at sunset Apparently, while we were outside, we heard a bottle smash at the entrance to the motel and a car pull over - apparently getting rid of evidence on DUI, as cop was pulling him over We barely managed to watch some TV this evening, but the next morning with all the venders back from the fair, there wasn't enough bandwidth for anything On the 6th, we checked out and drove to Bieber, where we got supplies, including butane for the butane cooktop we bought in Bieber 2 years prior, and continued on to Walker, where we checked into the Andruss. I wanted a Walker Burger for my birthday, but it was closed for 2 weeks, as Hwy 395 was closed for 2 weeks south of town. I made the mistake of parking under the tree with all the big birds! Our room Sunset this evening On the 7th, we stayed put at the Andruss, as Kathy wanted to delay getting to a very warm Borrego. Jef & Kathy at local deli - Altho the proprietor said she was done for the day, Kathy begged her to make us a pizza for my birthday, and she did so - a big and well done veggie pizza that lasted us 2 days Mia doing her thing at the Andruss Peanut On the 8th, packed up and detoured to the south to go thru Nevada to come into Bridgport the backway. We stopped at Mono Lake and walked around, got souveneirs, and continued on to Tuttle Creek campground. This time the south part was open, so we went to our usual site. Sometime during the night Jef thought he may have heard a plunk in the creek, but attributed it to random noise from a noisy creek. It wasn't. Rabbit bush blooming at Mono Lake Panorama of lake behind visitor center Kathy on a little hike we did there The visitor center Doggies doing there thing... this may be the last photo of Peanut After setting up tent at Tuttle Crepuscular rays over Whitney Windy enuff to blow this tent on its side (I had to put a big rock on mine while setting it up, as it had blown about 10 yards before I caught it) The nearby creek Noticed a big bird had landed at a nearby campsite, so tried to get a closer look Appears to be a heron I was close enuff Kathy by creek Mia in one doggie bed and Peanut in her happy home as we prepare for dinner Later that evening, after it was too dark for the meat bees, Kathy put Mia's bed on the table top. Jef had Peanut & Mia's dinner on the edge of the table when Kathy picked up the bed and knocked the dinner on Peanut's happy home, creating a mess. We got Peanut and Mia to eat some as we tried to get most of the chicken & soaked kibble back in the bowl. We managed to feed the dogs, after which Jef put Peanut's happy home into the tent We assumed Peanut was safe in the tent, but there was an access to the outside. We later found she threw up some of the dinner, and so might have wandered to look for some water Lights of houses overlooking Lone Pine On the morning of the 9th, around 2:30 am, Jef took Mia out to pee. Then went to take Peanut out. No Peanut. Jef & Kathy went looking with flashlights for her for the next 2 hours before the flashlights were spent. After sunrise, they continued searching for about 2 hours. Jef surmised that Peanut did her random walk, bumping into things, but tended to go down, and that meant probably heading down to the creek. By our site there was a 1' sheer dropoff into the creek, and Peanut probably fell in, and hopefully quickly drowned and was washed downstream, but if not, hypothermia would get her, as there was no way for her to get out of a creek with steep banks. Kathy talked to neighbors and camp host, but we packed up and left, driving to Borrego. The creek this morning Our camp If Peanut's last time on earth, a beautiful place for it 2 chuckwallas warming in the morning sun Poor Mia has lost her sister |
REMEMBERING PEANUT On the morning of the 10th, smoke had crept into Borrego, but it went away later that morning. Jef drove Kathy to 2 MD appointments. Also did some shopping. On the 18th, more paperwork & taking it easy. Ruddy moonrise this evening On the 19th, more taking it easy. On the 20th, Jef drove Kathy to MD in Escondido, where she got shot(s) in her hand(s). We stopped by PCT near Ranchita and hiked for an hour to the south. Kathy starting on PCT hike Starting the uphill climb Passing the grapevine area Leaf litter on trail High enuff for views We passed several of these trail gates along the way Nearly back to the car as we again cross the grapevine area Giant 4 O'clock bloom Sunset over the pool Sunset over the garage as we unload groceries On the 21st, chores and taking it easy. On the 22nd, more chores, taking it easy, and hiked to the old country club and back. They put a monument for the solar they installed in this building! Kathy in front of research center On the 23rd, Jef drove to the dentist for cleaning & xrays, but implant location was not healed, so delayed adding the crown there for another month. Did some shopping on the way home. Tiny gekko in the bathroom On the 24th, took it easy at home. On the 25th, got fire extinguisher out of office so it could be inspected. On the 26th, made special trip to Murietta to fix a snafu on Sept. 14 MD appt. Did some shopping, and stopped at PCT just before Warners and hiked for over an hour in hot weather(about 92°F). Kathy starting on hike Jimson weeds still blooming! Our turnaround place Kathy by one of the live oaks These yellow flowers are still blooming Trail goes thru a couple thick stands of sagebrush Trail parallels Agua Caliente wash Someone tied a ribbon round this live oak tree Looks like it's been a while since Gail Hanna has done any maintenance on this trail - besides vegetation crowding trail in places, this fallen tree is blocking the trail On the 27th, Jef did a lot of chores, including swapping out pool ladder. Guest house meter Main electric meter Looks like the orange tree on the side of the house is mostly dead The smaller pine tree is half dead - it's been a rough summer on a lot of plants On the 28th, mostly took it easy at home, doing some chores. | |||||||||||||||||||||
