Mar 2024

On the 1st, mostly took it easy at home.

On the 2nd, Patty came by and we set her up in Sewanee house for the nite. We had dinner with her at WStar.

Clouds over mtns., so WINDY!

Sunrise this morning

At Sewanee with Kathy, me, Ann, Patty & 2F

Ann wanted berries in her champagne!

On the 3rd, Mr. Patty(Clay) met up with us and we lunched at La Casa before they headed home.

Small rainbow this morning

We went to lunch at La Casa with 2F, Ann, Clay and 2F's sister Patty

On the 4th, went with 2F & Ann to a late lunch at the Red O. Then Jef went to Sewanee and replaced toilet lever & got it not to stick.

At the Red O

The loud bird was next to our table and mocking us, so I took a pic of it before it flew away

Lunch is served: Kathy got a French Dip, Ann got fish tacos, 2F got a burger melt...

...and Jef got a burger - later enhanced with Kathy's horsey sauce and a roasted jalapeno

Leaving - this is the first time any of us dined in the new outdoor area

Leaving the grounds

Saw this sun dog at Sewanee

Same contrail seen at Sewanee is also at WStar house

On the 5th, drove Kathy to dentist & did some shopping.

While stopped at signal had time to snap pic of Ramona's new road arch

Noticed really cool clouds on drive home while nearing Ranchita

The biz that appears closed was called the Ranchita Bodega

Mr. Yeti is fenced in now

Clouds before heading down the grade

Kathy snapped a few pix while heading down the grade

On the 6th, Kathy was still hurting but returned to work, seeing 2 patients this windy day (Originally 4, but 1 no-show and 1 cancellation due to intensity of the wind)

Cool double rainbow this morning

Ann & 2F(Jeff) left after 3 weeks while it was still drizzling

Jef waiting for no-show noticed the shape below overhang at office fitted view of mountains

It continued to rain in various parts of San Ysidros, but not down in the valley

Jef snapped pic of Sewanee house with cool cloud behind it on way to deliver BP cuff to Kathy doing a home care

On way home, Jef snapped a few pix of "action" statues with nice clouds behind

Enuff rain to get ocotillos blooming, but not enuff for any leaves yet

On the 7th, Jef walked to town for mail and picking up med for Kathy at pharmacy - about 2 hours.

Arriving at the Mall

On the 8th, drove Kathy to MD appt in Escondido. We did some shopping on the way home.

Kathy was impressed with this custom Jeep at Staters

Missed most of the snow shots on the way to town and most of snow had melted on the return, but it is visible here at the new Santa Ysabel gas station

On the 9th, mostly took it easy at home.

On the 10th, drove Kathy to Rancho Mirage for MD appointment and did some shopping at Staters on the way home.

At offramp to MD, looking to San Gorgonio...

On the 11th, Kathy went back to work on this somewhat rainy day.

After the rain started this afternoon

After water started flowing in, put towels to absorb most of it

Probably rained about 1/4" this day

On the 12th, had a day between 2 rainstorms.

Mtns illuminated by sunrise

Sunrise this morning

As it was trash day, Jef filled up rest of trash with dead beavertails

Jef cleaned out half the closet in guestroom - failed to find Ann's jewelry part she dropped, but noticed a rodent had lived there a while back

At sunset this afternoon, nearly full moon just below this cloud

Looking east from house, not so much colour is it wasn't completely clear to the coast

On the 13th, it started raining just before sunrise and rained off and on all day. Spent most of the day hunkering down at home, as temps never got above the mid 50s.

It started raining before sunrise this day

Mostly cloudy, but some colour in sunrise

Water started coming in minutes after it started raining

Turned out to be a cool sunrise

Noticed glare from rock face across valley and noticed it was my old place('70 to '71). Tom Allen lived at house on left and Gale Gordan still had 25 more years to live. I hiked occasionally on road to lower spring, but found a shortcut on a granite dry waterfall

Panorama at high point of hike

Kathy finally got out and walked the dogs with me later in the afternoon, but was only able to do about 1/2 mile

On the 15th, drove to Ramona to shop, then to Carmel Mtn to shop & have sushi with Shimon & Flaco, then to Poway to get a 28" pizza, then to Escondido for poker with Bryan, Ken, Sid & Frank G. Turns out both Ken & Frank G were heavy into Burning Man & compared notes & coincidentally, but unknown to them until this nite, worked on the same projects with the same people. Lost 4 at poker & brought the remainder(about 1/4) of the pizza home.

Apparently the Borrego garden tour was either going on this weekend

On the 16th, took it easy at home.

Jef finished what Kathy & Kym didn't of last nite's pizza

Kathy & doggies walked around the circle & increased to over 1 mile

Parallel contrails

On the 17th, made corned beef & cabbage & had Morgans over for dinner. Kathy was not feeling so good, so Jef did most of the cooking.

After corned beef was cooked, Jef added the veggies

When Jef cleaned up front patio, noticed tiny poops below this area of ficus & saw a couple baby hummingbirds in this nest

Jef & Kathy with Pam & Jaime

On the 18th, Kathy was full-blown sick & for first time registered a fever.

Jef went to Sewanee & did some cleaning

You can see the out limit of cleaning the floor between the legs of this table

On the 19th, Kathy still sick & actually threw up once.

Notice my tiled over table had sides peeling off and plants growing in the crack!

On the 20th, Jef went over to Sewanee to do some more clean up. At WStar, while Hector was cleaning up the yard, he noticed a 24/7 leak in one line. Jef isolated it to the valve at the end, and Jef got him to replace the valve with a brass one.

Replaced valve

Meter is pretty much staying still in the transition to summer, where it will head south

On the 21st, Kathy felt a little better. Jef hung around WStar, doing chores.

On the 22nd, mostly took it easy at home.

Meter still heading slightly north

Oleander roots that were trashing this part of irrigation line were up to twice the thickenss of the pipe!

Kathy told me about the sunset, so I took a few pix

Our raised gardens

On the 10th, we decided to take doggies to De Anza area, as it was a bit winding at our place. We hiked along Palm Canyon Wash from Vista Villas, and actually made it to the edge of the Palms at Indianhead. On way back we took wrong turn, but ran into Matt, who had been stuck in the sand for over 3 hours. We promised to come back and get him out, which we did.

We started by dropping down into the wash, but Kathy vetoed this due to the soft sand

Out of the wash paralleling it, we noticed some white poles - a bird on this one

Bird flew off as we approached - from pattern on wing bottoms, perhaps a small hawk

The dirt road we followed hit the edge of the park and then paralleled the park boundary

Kathy, as usual, was suffering from pain and shortness of breath - here she is at edge of park employee housing with Palm Canyon Campground behind her

On the 12th, continued wind after some sprinkles in the morning. While Kathy went to MD, Jef walked to town and back (the short level route). When Kathy got home, she was able to walk, so then we took dogs on another 3+ mile hike - this time to south of BS Rd. We stopped by Santiago Estates and talked to Mauri, who is Shirley's neighbor. Shirley is still in hospital. Jef walked over 7 miles this day.

Day started out a little drizzly - this is rainbow cloud in mtns.

On the 13th, Kathy went to work. Jef got a call from her that she was locked out of building with no shoes or car keys. After Jef showed up, she thought of accessing her office via the neighboring clinic, and succeeded. First big rain of the season started late afternoon this day.

Sunrise this morning

Looks dark & rainy in mtns.

A wait at the noodle place, so Jef went across the street to City Tacos, got the Mexicali taco, which was basically a Philly-cheesesteak taco(really good) and a Pacifico for Kathy - our table was ready before Kathy finished her beer, so we headed back to OB Noodles

Kathy & Ann at OB Noodles

Our dinner - I got the OB Special Pho, which was great

On the 24th, packed up and left the hotel... but accidentally took 2 pillows from the room mixed in with Kathy's. Stopped at "breakfast all day" for breakfast, drove to Petco and got a harness for Daisy, and then drove straight home to Borrego.

Jan 2024

On the 1st, after just arriving from the great white north, we stayed up a couple hours into the new year. Stayed home most of NY day with Kathy resting and Jef catching up on paperwork.

On the 2nd, Jef drove to SD to get dentist to restart implant procedure. Apparently, the last bone graft failed, so he tried another kind of bone graft this day. Did some shopping before returning home to Borrego.

Moon behind clouds this evening

On the 8th, we had some good clouds as LA burns, but power was not cut off to us. Mostly took it easy at home.

Sunrise this morning

By sunset, clouds had diminished quite a bit

On the 9th, took it easy at home until Jef drove over to Sewanee house. He went on an hour walk in his old stomping ground before doing a little spackling on new laundry room.

Leaving on walk - just noticed shed is in need of roof repair

Found this jawbone of large mammal washed down to this point in the was - bighorn or horse?

When I started hike, noticed worn trail - perhaps Charles hiked there a lot?

On the 10th, drove to Rancho Mirage to get meds for Kathy.

On the 11th, drove Kathy to Escondido and did some shopping on way home - also got Thai food to go in Ramona.

On the 12th, took it easy at home mostly.

On the 13th, took it easy at home mostly.

On the 14th, drove Kathy's car to J&T to get a new set of tires(after 27.5K miles) and walked home over the hill (about 3.5 miles). Later that day, drove to work with Kathy & then walked to J&T to get her car. This was the first day this year that Kathy felt well enough to work.

On the 15th, drove Kathy to MD in Escondido and did some shopping on way home. Kathy was nauseous the whole way and actually threw up on way home. We didn't get gas at Santa Ysabel, as power was out there.

Kathy drove down the grade, so Jef took photos of Salton Sea on the way down

We were worried, but power was never shut off in Borrego as it was in Santa Ysabel

On the 16th, Jef met Dave at Sewanee and did some painting while Kathy worked her 2nd day this week. Today would have been mom's 97th birthday.

Life-flight helicopter landing at its base at the clinic

Dave painting - later found out it was a clear coat in a mismarked container

On the 17th, our appointment to pick up rescue dog, "Bees Knees" a part dachshund, part beagle, was cancelled. We failed to ever meet the dog.

On the 18th, drove over to Sewanee with paint, but wound up just cutting up some downed branches and spackled instead.

This roadrunner was atop my truck that I would drive to Sewanee shortly after this

Coat of "paint" we put on new laundry room dried clear

On the 19th, after taking it easy all day (Jef worked on taxes), we got pizza and dined with Morgans - Pam would have her back surgery in 3 days.

On the 20th, took it easy at home, as it was a holiday and PO was closed..

On the 21st, Kathy went to work with only 3 patients on the schedule.

Another cool morning

Cool this evening, as well

At Sewanee house

Jef painted about half of new laundry room

On the 22nd, drove Kathy to Encinitas near Rancho Santa Fe to pick up our 2nd puppy in 3 months - the new Daisy Dog is a beagle/chihuahua mix.

Another cool morning

Nice sunrise this morning

Drove Kathy to pick up Daisy Dog - here in Encinitas with the founder. We found his Tijuana facility handled 500 dogs, and he had brought 2 dogs today for people like us to look at

Daisy Dog

As Daisy seemed to get along with Pepper we drove away with her. She got carsick & threw up a couple time on the drive home, however

On the 23rd, due to Santa Ana winds in the mountains, our power was again shut off.

Jef ran this generator this nite. Had technical problems, but finally got it going until the middle of the nite when it ran out of gas

Kathy camp cooking in kitchen - filet mignon, rice & salad for dinner

On the 24th, the blackout ended before 8am, so Jef gradually disassembled to temporary electric situation. We walked the new doggy Daisy for the first time this afternoon and Jan joined us for dinner this evening.
