For our December, 1997 hike, Karyn and I took a circuitous loop that started going down this slot, where we found someone to take our picture, going up another, and finishing by going down a ridge back to the car parked at the top of the Slot. The hike covered about 3 miles, and took about 4 hours. | Jef on an earlier hike in Slot
We found this example of an ocotillo with particularly parallel branches. Passed by this near the boundary of the slot canyons and the rocky part of the mountain.
Borrego Mountain, West Butte, rises several hundred feet above the Borrego Badlands. The top is a large area with a handful of peaks that seem like they could be the highest. Here is a photo taken by Karyn, note shadow at bottom right, from one such peak looking at Jef on another. None of these proved to be the actual peak. |

Karyn, 2/16/98 | In the western foothills of Borrego Mountain, West Butte, rise several that are pock-marked with wind caves. Also some very colourful badlands can be found between these and the peak. Note the shades of red and yellow in this landscape. | Jef at wind caves |
Karyn in wind cave | We finished our hike on 2/16/98 by walking along the road just above the Slot. | Karyn completing our 2/16/98 hike. |
