San Ysidro Mountain, as viewed from the Borrego Valley. Photo taken 2/15/98 by Jef. |
First summit of San Ysidro. This register received a handful of sign-ins each year. The highest peak in this ridge is 1000' higher, but out of sight of the town of Borrego Springs. Here is a picture of the register on the summit. Note the Salton Sea in the background. |
The town of Borrego Springs viewed from near the first peak on San Ysidro Mountain, after a January snowfall. |
My shadow on first summit of San Ysidro, cast on a Pinyon. The rear side of Indianhead Peak is in the mid-ground. The Santa Rosas are in the background. |
Here I am at about 4500' with a thimble shaped peak at about the same elevation in the background. |
The town of Borrego Springs viewed from midway up Palm Ridge. Note the Palm Canyon Campground just to the left of the ridge, which is fairly straight and steep. |
Leaving the visitor center late at 10:30, I barely made it back to recognizable trail before dark. I used my flashlight for the last mile or so. The sunset colours of the Santa Rosas were most excellent, and it was a thrill to see the lights of Borrego come on while I was still up rather high. This hike confirmed my belief that I should leave late enough that it will be difficult to return before dark. |
