Southern area of park. Access via S-2, turning towards Palm Spring, but continuing down wash about 5 miles to Arroyo Tapiado. Also on this map are some slot canyons in Arroyo del Diablo, which I plan to explore someday. |
Returning from the West Mud Cave hike loop here are Jef and Michel. This is a half mile hike, including about a quarter mile thru a mud cave. |
Paco is walking in the Big Mud Cave wash on the eastern drainage of Arroyo Tapiado. Jef took the picture from a ridge. |
Greg, Mari and Cameron (underfoot) in mud cave off of Arroyo Tapiado. This is one of the large chambers with fair illumination on both ends, and is right off the main Arroyo Tapiado Wash. This is called Big Mud Cave on the maps. |
Paco is standing above upper exit at end of west mud cave. It's a difficult scramble up, and a challenge finding your way back on the surface. The pock-marks in the badland surface can be cave skylights. Falls of over 75 feet are possible, and some caves may not have exits. When Paco first showed me this cave, we saw bat shadows flying on a wall illuminated by this opening. It was way too cool! |
