Borrego Springs President 2011 - 2012
Martha Deichler

RYLA Conference
Speakers: Borrego Springs High School/Interact students Eric Gonzales-Kramer, Jaime Blaheley and Aurora Quintero
RYLA = Rotary Youth Leadership Awards

RYLA Conference

  • half boys, half girls
  • 300 students
  • from Orange, Imperial & San Diego Counties
  • 2 1/2 days, and 40 hours

Eric - Many speakers were fun to listen to, including:

  • John Deed - mountain climber and fisherman: his message was don't sit back in life, go out and do what you want to do
  • Dave Corey - prisoner of war - his plane was shot down in Korea. He survived by keeping his sense of humor and communicated with other prisoners. His message was to get his cell mates to make the best of it.

Jaime - the program was about who do we want to be and what changes do we want to make in life (vs. what profession we want for ourselves). There were student communicators who spoke about their Interact at their own school. This gave me ideas for our Interact at Borrego Springs High School.

Aurora - We joined a large group of students to build a family. In this "team-building exercise" we were given name badges with the name of a college on each badge. Each of us were to find the other 5 students who had the same college name on their badges out to the 300 participants.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE RAM'S HORN
Each year the goal of the web page and the newsletter is to report on the club’s activities. The role of the newsletter is to inform and educate. Why not try doing it, you will like it. One of the most important tools that should be given to every member is an updated member book at the first meeting in July. How can members understand Rotary unless they have a copy? Why not send the member book electronically? There seems to be confusion as to the operating and foundation budgets. Every member should have a clear understanding what funds go to operations and which go to the foundation. There seems to be puzzlement as to how the annual budgets are presented and approved. Reporting the results of a fund raising event should be right after the event or ASAP. If budgets are completed using accepted principles, it should be rare to have budget meetings.
