Speaker: Steven Biers, Park Ranger | |||
Steve has been a park ranger for 10 years. A big part of his job is "speaking out for the animals".
He also plays a large roll as the "science geek" at Borrego Springs Elementary. At this point, he gave a pin-hole camera demonstration. He gave out to the audience kits composed of: foil, a tube, paper, and a lot of tape. He showed us how to make a camera obscura - the first camera ever made.
After assembly, at first, when you looked into the tube thru the hole on the other end, the image was upside down and very unclear. When the hole was made smaller, the image became upright and more clear. Moral to the story: many people come the the desert to shoot their guns and off-road "off" the road, and they never pay attention to the real desert - the animals, the vegetation, and the fragile desert floor. I suppose the analogy is (I'm guessing) that these people who abuse the desert are like those who look thru the larger hole and see very little detail, but they should do the equivalent of looking thru the smaller hole to see the previously unseen details, and so be aware of the damage they have been causing - and then to, hopefully, not disrespect our desert. Steve patrols the Fish Creek and Carrizo Impact Area. He tries to keep people away from the explosives that have been there for years. The explosives are called ordinance. many date back to WWII. Teams of explosives experts have been sent in to try to decide what to do with this ordinance. For now, visitors have to be kept out of these areas. He also announced that July 4th will be the beginning of this year's sheep count. 60 people will be sent into the area encompassing the Santa Rosa Mountatins to the Yan Ysidros. Fish and Game will come in later this year with a helicopter and catch & collar the young sheep. This will help keep track of their movement. Currently, the sheep count is around 960, which as increased considerably over the past 10 or more years.

Each year the goal of the web page and the newsletter is to report on the club’s activities. The role of the newsletter is to inform and educate. Why not try doing it, you will like it. One of the most important tools that should be given to every member is an updated member book at the first meeting in July. How can members understand Rotary | unless they have a copy? Why not send the member book electronically? There seems to be confusion as to the operating and foundation budgets. Every member should have a clear understanding what funds go to operations and which go to the foundation. There seems to be puzzlement as to how the annual budgets are presented and approved. | Reporting the results of a fund raising event should be right after the event or ASAP. If budgets are completed using accepted principles, it should be rare to have budget meetings. |
For the 2nd week in a row, our president, Bill Lewis, won the draing. He again donated it back to the club | Submitted by Kathleen Johnson. Temporary Secretary | Editor Kathleen Johnson jefbstc@gmail.com |
